I think they had him take a bath outside in a tub for several reasons and one of them definitely wasn't because they didn't want a black kid using their bathtub. If they had him take a bath in the bathroom by himself, there was no guarantee that he would get a proper bath since he hated getting clean plus I don't think they would have filmed just him getting a bath by himself. If they did film it in the bathroom, the bathtub is up against the wall so Jim Bob, Jason & Grandpa could not have surrounded the tub like they could outside plus they would have had to get down on their knees & probably would have shown those three from their backside because it would have been hard to get a camera angle of all of their faces. (I'm sure that would have been hard on Grandpa's knees too, especially since there is no telling how long it would have taken to film the scene.) They were able to stand up outside. Josh would not have been able to ask, "Are those women folk looking out the windows at me?" When Josh asked where are his clothes, they let him know that Olivia had washed them & they were able to show them hanging on the clothesline. That's just my thoughts on it. ;D

What kids did you see take baths? I only saw grandpa and John Boy once. Heh heh Zebulon's bath is one of the funniest things in the series! You see Erin washing her hair in the bath (which, I guess, isn' exactly the same thing), Cindy has a bath and holds up everybody else, Olivia gives John a bath in the bathroom once and, a bit off topic, but when John comes to collect Ike from the FBI I think they take him out when he's in the middle of a shower because he's just wearing a towel! Another very funny scene. Elizabeth and Amy also bath together. But yes, I think that's all the bathing you see the family do!

Whenever I think of the once or twice a week bathing folks did back then, I shudder...... even every other day would bother me.
We're spoiled ! But smell good......

I Remember On Little House , Mary And Laura bathed Together , And You Could SEE Laura's Breast's. She was just a little girl ( flat chested ). It was a cute Scene . I'm sure Melissa Gilbert would be enbarrased about that now.

Elizabeth and Aimee took a bubble bath together in the episode, The Hawk. They were singing a song, Three Little Fishies. Attachments:

That's right, I forgot about Elizabeth and Aimee in the tub! We've seen Elizabeth in the tub and on the toilet! Maybe that's one of the downsides of being the youngest ;D

Go back and read my post again.. I think you misunderstood it. I was referring to Jim Bob taking a bath outside, not Josh. If they had him take a bath in the bathroom by himself, there was no guarantee that he would get a proper bath since he hated getting clean plus I don't think they would have filmed just him getting a bath by himself. That's just my thoughts on it. ;D Well, I need to go get about an hour and a half of sleep before I have to get up. My two oldest boys have football official weigh ins at 8:00 a.m. (I am definitely a night owl) zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

:)Bathing in an outside tub was more of a thing in the old days. The Waltons didn't look nearly as dirty as some of those people up on the hill/mountain. They had a little more pride in the Walton household if not a little more money. The Waltons made sure their kids had love education and self respect

I think all TV shows are like that. I've noticed on shows, people will yes when offered a cup of coffee, and then take one sip, and leave. Maybe it's not attractive to watch someone eat? I don't know. In scenes set in pubs (on UK TV) you see characters order a drink, take one sip, and then leave! It's stupid - beer is now almost £4 a pint, so nobody does that!

It's so true sambda!! I don't believe there are too many people that would order beer and food, take one bite, one sip, and get so distracted with something else, that they need to leave right away. It's kind of funny, isn't it?

I agree that you don't always see the family getting ' washed ' up for supper, but I'm sure if you made a montage of clips of Olivia telling the children to do so, and John coming in from his work outside, that it is mentioned or observed more times than you think!
