Have you ever noticed that the majority of the time, the Waltons just come in & sit down to eat without washing their hands? The very few times that I have seen them wash their hands at the kitchen sink....it is just basically barely get your fingers wet & wipe them off with a dish towel. I have always taught my kids to wash up before every meal so it bothers me every time I just see them come from outside, the living room, etc.. and just sit down ready to eat. I guess it would have cut into the production time to show them washing up (LOL). But at least Olivia or Grandma could have said......Supper's ready go wash up, or ask them did you wash up?

Yes, it's true. Someone mentioned as well, not too long ago in another thread, that they never finish what they are eating. They come down to breakfast, and Livvy says, "Go to school", and all the food is still on their plates. I think all TV shows are like that. I've noticed on shows, people will yes when offered a cup of coffee, and then take one sip, and leave. Maybe it's not attractive to watch someone eat? I don't know.

I can understand it in the morning, since they've just come from upstairs and probably washed their hands in the bathroom. But when you see them coming in from outside doing all kinds of things (cleaning animals for example) it really is quite a point that they don't clean their hands!

I had never thought about it, but you are right. I do wonder how much importance was placed on hygiene back in those days. Many rural people didn't even have running water in their houses. Neither of my parents did when they were growing up.
I don't think anyone would ever leave food on their plates back in those days. This was during the depression, and many people in our country were going hungry. The kids would have been reminded of that and told to eat their food. When I was growing up, we were told about the hungry children in China to put us on a guilt trip about cleaning our plates. Nowadays, we have to fight obesity in children, so I don't think this is as much of an issue.

Probably why I loathe lima beans to this day, LOL!

I think both these washing/eating are just TV licence. I'll lay any odds that Earl and his siblings HAD to do both there really isn't enough time on in a programme to show all this. Like lots of other everyday things that donbt make for good television. But I will say our kids had to wash before eating.

I've noticed the hygiene and the dinner table. I'm positive those kids would have eaten and not just one bite. As hard as times were I'd bet they never wasted anything. I was always taught to never put more on my plate than I could eat. "Don't let your eyes be bigger than your belly". I was never made to eat anything I didn't want but rem the smell of livers which I hate & hominey, or any pickled veggie (corn, beans, etc.) yuck! The smell would gag me. But I do love pickles!

How do we really know what they did or didnt do? Come on. Its a television show and they'll show you the important parts and what they want you to see. It doesnt mean they didnt wash their hands or not clean. I saw them take baths. waltonsportwriter

I think everyone writing on this thread realizes this is only a TV show, and we are just discussing a topic like we do on every other thread. I realize they are not able to show us every move they all make, but I think we are just saying , that they could have shown the audience that they washed their hands before eating. I don't think anyone is saying that they were dirty either. What kids did you see take baths? I only saw grandpa and John Boy once.

Growing up on a cattle ranch I had to wash my hand's all the time because they'd be dirty from feeding hay and grain , mucking stall's , digging in the dirt for fishing worm's to go trout fishing , hanging wash on the line. My mom even said > go wash your neck , I see dust on it from being outside all day.
You don't want o eat fried chicken with dirty hand's , same with corn. Bisquits either.

I hate the shows where they leave the beer! I agree with you flyaway, Three's Company always left beer on the table.

Speaking of taking baths, I just watched that episode with Jody the little black kid and Jim Bob was taking a bath outside in a tub. Why?
