I am just watching The Legacy on INSP. In one of the opening scenes, Elizabeth is shaving her legs. Jim Bob asks why and she tells him it's one of the things women have to endure for beauty - such as hair rollers and girdles.
Seriously- does anyone use either of these things anymore? How about other "torture" devices for women - past or present? Not sure if there are any for men!

I am watching Mad Men on Netflix and it is the Maidenform episode. It is a campaign for Playtex with the theme of "Every woman is a Jackie and a Marylin".
I barely remember those pointy bras.

He said that is what was causing the majority of her back and GI tracts problems. She still uses hair rollers though.

If women would lift weights they would not need girdles.

If women would lift weights they would not need girdles. They still wear those things but now it is "shape wear." I guess that sounds better then girdle. Can't wear any of those things. I just can't breath or move! I don't life weights but I do lift cast iron pots and pans. Does that count?

I married at 19 and on my wedding day my bridesmaids presented me with an exquisite boned lace and satin corset as a gift. They roped me into it and even though I was already a slip of a girl I ended up with a waist measurement that would have rivalled a 17 year old Elizabeth Taylor's! end result was I fainted at the altar and the thing had to be removed by mum and my female attendants while the priest and the groom's party stood to one side Mum still wears curlers in her hair though

Haven't worn a girdle (mostly for holding stockings up) since pantyhose came in -- late 60's ? -- so, for me, it was about 15 years of suffering !! ... there was also the problem of keeping the seams straight before they came up with seamless !!
Re curlers -- I remember the hours spent during the 50's, 60's and 70's getting up very early in the morning (4:30am?) in order to shower, set wet hair with setting lotion, sitting under a dryer for 45-60 minutes, putting makeup on, etc. -- took at least 2 hours to get ready to leave for school or work !!! ... but, even after that, in the 80's and 90's my routine took about the same time, because I dried my hair and put just "dry" rollers (not heated) in while doing my makeup, getting dressed, etc. -- worked very well for a shoulder-length pageboy.... back then, I was always very meticulous with facial care and makeup, which really took a toll on my available time !! In the cosmetics industry in particular, everything had to match your outfit -- foundation, blush, eye shadow, lipstick -- took some effort, I tell ya !!
Even with pantyhose, the time spent purchasing and hand-washing them was considerable, as well as having enough of the right color or shade !! ... oh, and the time spent polishing shoes, and having to have many colors of those as well -- dark brown, black in both calf and patent, navy, sometimes even red, gray, etc.!!! ... and matching handbags, and matching gloves.... YIKES.... Eventually, I got smart and wore black patent almost all the time, usually had four pairs going, wore them year round, and they go with anything !! .... the only problem was the time I packed two left shoes for a business trip !!
But, somehow it was fun....

I missed the "girdle"generation, but I do wear shapewear. It's not bad to wear but a pain to put on. I used electric rollers when I was in high school. I could set my hair and while it was curling, I could put my makeup on. I used to get up super early to wash and blow dry my hair, then set it. By my senior year, I said "screw this, I need my sleep!" I showered, washed my hair, got dressed and put my make-up on and went out with my long, almost waist-length hair soaking wet! It took until about 3rd period until it was dry. When the yearbooks came out, a guy in my first period class said, "Wow--so that's what you look like with your hair dry." I've been a "wash and go" person ever since--all times of the year, in the coldest of winters--I go out with a wet head. So don't believe EVERYthing your mother told you.

I remember my momma wearing a girdle. My maternal grandmother would always wear curlers in her hair at night (soft thin wire ones), unless she had been to the beauty shop. Then she would wrap her head in toilet paper before going to bed and use a metal clip to hold the toilet paper in front. I have some of those flat metal spring clips for memories.
Neither of my grandmothers wore makeup or nail polish. My momma has always only wore foundation and occasionally uses just clear nail polish. So I am personally happy to be a plain Jane. I don't wear makeup or nail polish. I don't do manicures or pedicures.
I've never dyed my hair nor do I ever intend to (I look forward to playing Mrs. Santa Claus ). I have had the same haircut/style for the past 31 years. The only exception was when I first got married and we started trying to have children. Mr. Forever loves long hair and I told him that I would grow mine out (just in the back) until I got pregnant. I did that for two to three years. When we found out that we would probably never have a child of our own, I whacked it off! I love just towel drying it and then letting it air dry. Mr. Forever has said numerous times that was the first thing that he found attractive about me...that I was a natural woman. LOL! His momma never wore makeup or dyed her hair and she never once in her life shaved her legs.
My 18 year old daughter does wear hot curlers in her hair from time to time.
patriciaanne - I have always went out with a wet head too, no matter what time of the year it is or what the weather is like.
Note: I am not saying that anything is wrong with makeup, nail polish, manicures, pedicures, dyeing your hair, etc. I just personally have never gotten into it, and that has definitely saved a lot of my time and money .

I am way more gray than I want to be--started in my 30s. I'd probably be mostly gray if I didn't dye my hair. I have a "touch-up" every few weeks at the roots and I also get foils--sometimes lowlights (darker than my color) and sometimes highlights (lighter than my color) and sometimes both. I really like the lowlights. I use the highlights very sparingly. I do get pedicures and I thoroughly enjoy them. I am way overdue for one now and may try to squeeze it in tonight on my way to my knitting circle (my new Friday night activity). I don't get regular manicures. For a couple of years I got those gel manicures, but it took a terrible toll on my nails and I decided all those chemicals couldn't possibly be good for me. Plus, even though I only had to go every two or three weeks, it took too much time (and money). So my nails are now au natural. If I have time, I may try to polish them myself for the reunion. I like long hair and have always kept my hair long. But I never wanted a style that required a lot of work every day. So I stopped layering it. this way it's easy to braid or put up in a pony tail. I can even make a quick bun by tying my hair up in a knot on top of my head.

I edited my previous post. Look for the Note at the bottom of it.
I have a lot of white hairs, that's why I'm hoping to be able to play Mrs. Claus at Christmastime in the future. I have told my foreverettes that they have given every one of those white hairs to me. LOL! All of my daughters love long hair. My 18 year old wears her hair like you do. Hers was down to her bum until this past June when she donated 13 inches of it to Locks of Love. It's still down to the middle of her back and she's growing it back out to the previous length that it was. She loves braiding it, wearing it in a ponytail or in a bun on her head.
I think long hair is beautiful...just not for me. I had long hair down to my bum until 4th grade. I begged and pleaded with my momma to let me get it cut short and she finally let me. I haven't looked back since, except for those two or three years I mentioned in my previous post (then it was like a long shag in the back, kept it short like normal on the front and sides).

I have short hair, and I wore the same style for a long time. When I was 2 and 3 I wore my hair. When I was in elementary school in mostly the 4th grade,I wore my hair past my ears. When I was younger I wore my in a shag. Since my hair is short, when I wash it,I just towel dry it,and let it go.When my hair is wet I don't wear it wet out side when it is raining or cold.

I am wondering if anyone ever ironed their hair? I never had to as mine was and is as straight as a board anyway. During my waist length period though, I used to pile it all up and roll it around an empty frozen orange juice can. Never worked - still straight!

Ironing board, wax paper and nerves to not iron my scalp Just as curly now as it was then. Thick too.

I remember my younger sister ironing her hair in the mid- to late-60's.... when that whole hippie thing was going on -- long hair, parted in the middle, supposed to look like you didn't touch it, yet it took just as long to get that "look" !! ... kind of like purposely fraying your jeans to make them look old and well used.... as well as affixing patches that weren't needed !!!
