I am wondering if anyone ever ironed their hair? I never had to as mine was and is as straight as a board anyway. During my waist length period though, I used to pile it all up and roll it around an empty frozen orange juice can. Never worked - still straight! I can say with confidence I have never ironed my hair.

And then in high school when we dissected frogs in biology class, my buddy and I used to make them dance like Michigan frog in front of the girls, who weren't too pleased. Hello, My Baby! hello my honey!, hello my ragtime gal!....

I got lucky. When I was in biology class I just couldn't dissect a poor frog. It made me sad that they killed it just for dissection. My biology teacher knew how I felt about it, so while the rest of the class participated in that, I wrote a term paper for my grade.

I married at 19 and on my wedding day my bridesmaids presented me with an exquisite boned lace and satin corset as a gift. They roped me into it and even though I was already a slip of a girl I ended up with a waist measurement that would have rivalled a 17 year old Elizabeth Taylor's! end result was I fainted at the altar and the thing had to be removed by mum and my female attendants while the priest and the groom's party stood to one side Mum still wears curlers in her hair though I married at nineteen also but without the corset. My daughter is a Civil War buff and one Christmas she asked for a corset. For the fun of it, we would put it in and pull it as tight as possible. No slouching (or breathing) with that thing on. My daughter used to dress up in full regalia and sashay around the house. My house is not built for hoop skirts!

Haven't worn a girdle (mostly for holding stockings up) since pantyhose came in -- late 60's ? -- so, for me, it was about 15 years of suffering !! ... there was also the problem of keeping the seams straight before they came up with seamless !!
Re curlers -- I remember the hours spent during the 50's, 60's and 70's getting up very early in the morning (4:30am?) in order to shower, set wet hair with setting lotion, sitting under a dryer for 45-60 minutes, putting makeup on, etc. -- took at least 2 hours to get ready to leave for school or work !!! ... but, even after that, in the 80's and 90's my routine took about the same time, because I dried my hair and put just "dry" rollers (not heated) in while doing my makeup, getting dressed, etc. -- worked very well for a shoulder-length pageboy.... back then, I was always very meticulous with facial care and makeup, which really took a toll on my available time !! In the cosmetics industry in particular, everything had to match your outfit -- foundation, blush, eye shadow, lipstick -- took some effort, I tell ya !!
Even with pantyhose, the time spent purchasing and hand-washing them was considerable, as well as having enough of the right color or shade !! ... oh, and the time spent polishing shoes, and having to have many colors of those as well -- dark brown, black in both calf and patent, navy, sometimes even red, gray, etc.!!! ... and matching handbags, and matching gloves.... YIKES.... Eventually, I got smart and wore black patent almost all the time, usually had four pairs going, wore them year round, and they go with anything !! .... the only problem was the time I packed two left shoes for a business trip !!
But, somehow it was fun....
It took a lot of work but it is sure better then the pajama and slipper wearing teens I see slumping to school every day!

I missed the "girdle"generation, but I do wear shapewear. It's not bad to wear but a pain to put on. I used electric rollers when I was in high school. I could set my hair and while it was curling, I could put my makeup on. I used to get up super early to wash and blow dry my hair, then set it. By my senior year, I said "screw this, I need my sleep!" I showered, washed my hair, got dressed and put my make-up on and went out with my long, almost waist-length hair soaking wet! It took until about 3rd period until it was dry. When the yearbooks came out, a guy in my first period class said, "Wow--so that's what you look like with your hair dry." I've been a "wash and go" person ever since--all times of the year, in the coldest of winters--I go out with a wet head. So don't believe EVERYthing your mother told you. I am wash and go also. Walk into work with wet hair every day! When you see me at the reunion I will be easy to pick out in the morning, I will be the one with the wet hair! Just stand next to me, Patricia Anne! Missed the girdle generation also, thank God. Don't think I could have worn one. Always wondered how girls peed with those tight things in. In high school, I would pull my hair into a pony tail on top of my head and set it with really big curlers. My brother would pretend they were torpedoes which would always make me mad! But at least the curlers did not bother me when I slept.

I remember my momma wearing a girdle. My maternal grandmother would always wear curlers in her hair at night (soft thin wire ones), unless she had been to the beauty shop. Then she would wrap her head in toilet paper before going to bed and use a metal clip to hold the toilet paper in front. I have some of those flat metal spring clips for memories.
Neither of my grandmothers wore makeup or nail polish. My momma has always only wore foundation and occasionally uses just clear nail polish. So I am personally happy to be a plain Jane. I don't wear makeup or nail polish. I don't do manicures or pedicures.
I've never dyed my hair nor do I ever intend to (I look forward to playing Mrs. Santa Claus ). I have had the same haircut/style for the past 31 years. The only exception was when I first got married and we started trying to have children. Mr. Forever loves long hair and I told him that I would grow mine out (just in the back) until I got pregnant. I did that for two to three years. When we found out that we would probably never have a child of our own, I whacked it off! I love just towel drying it and then letting it air dry. Mr. Forever has said numerous times that was the first thing that he found attractive about me...that I was a natural woman. LOL! His momma never wore makeup or dyed her hair and she never once in her life shaved her legs.
My 18 year old daughter does wear hot curlers in her hair from time to time.
patriciaanne - I have always went out with a wet head too, no matter what time of the year it is or what the weather is like.
Note: I am not saying that anything is wrong with makeup, nail polish, manicures, pedicures, dyeing your hair, etc. I just personally have never gotten into it, and that has definitely saved a lot of my time and money . Looks like there will be three of us in the wet hair in the morning club! Except I will be shaving my legs! My natural hair is black and if I did not shave....yikes!

I have a funny curler story. I often drive to school with another teacher who lives down the road from me. She always gets in my car with curlers in her hair. Well we were driving down the road and a turtle was in the road. She made me stop while she jumped out to save the turtle. She was crossing the road holding up her hand stopping cars, saying thank you to everyone, and all the while holding onto the turtle. I sat in the car watching and laughing. When she finally got back in the car, she touched her head and said, " OMG, I HAVE CURLERS IN MY HAIR!" When she retires, I will have to reenact that day at her party.

We wondered why those girls never dated us. Making frog skeletons dance like Michigan frog in front of their face must have been a turnoff for them. I know not to do that anymore. I figured that out. - Good plan Frank...hey...is there anything else you know about women? - Nope, that's it.

If I haven't said it before, I think Teresa (Mrs. dowsee) is a very lucky lady -- you can't fool us, Frank !!

LOL! I bought one of those spanx (girdle) and wore it with a dress to smooth out my lumps and bumps! I was like Lucille Ball putting the stupid thing on! LOL, I felt so foolish but couldn't help sharing my experience with you all! Needless to say after the struggle to get out of it I have never worn it since!

I don't think any, certainly not many, women do nearly as much primping these days -- it was a different era....
Yet, there are so many nail salons, tanning salons, etc. -- one thing I never had done professionally was my nails.... I liked doing them myself -- I found it relaxing and got quite good at it, even using repair wraps !! -- Now, this is going to sound crazy -- but, while in cosmetics, I had to plan my wardrobe carefully, so that I didn't have to change the color of my nail polish very often.... would start off the week wearing a pastel, then maybe a few days later a darker shade right over it, etc., etc... because nail polish remover is not good for your nails !!
Can't believe I'm admitting this
