The Gift, from Season Two. Jason learns how hard life can be as his friend Seth is declared terminally ill. From the outset the innocence of youth is shattered by a single declaration; Olivia and John Boy know this, Seth's Mother cannot accept the news, Jason has to find out the hard way.. Time to open your heart as acceptance spreads throughout the assembled cast. Denial, anger, comfort; all three are acted out superbly. Ron Howard is very good as Seth, John Boy and Jason are at times sublime. Magnificent. mercantile Yes. An excellent episode. And Ron Howard was very good, but I kept seeing Richie Cunningham in my mind. My fault alone ... but at least I wasn't imagining Opie

It is very difficult for me to watch that episode though. It always leaves me feeling depressed. The First Casualty affects me the same way, as does the episode about the young schoolteacher who died. I think it was The Idol. Young people aren't supposed to die. They are supposed to be full of life, and when a young person dies, it leaves me with an empty feeling. It was sad when Grandpa died. It was sad when Martha Corinne died. But that was different. They were old, they had experienced life, and that life had come to an end. Seth and GW and the young schoolteacher all died too soon. All 3 episodes were excellent, but they are hard for me to watch.

Oops. I'm not quite sure what happened there, I was thanking Brenda for her episode comments. I must have hit return by mistake! Anyway, thank you. mercantile

I am sitting here watching The Pearls as Jason and Elizabeth are talking in the bus station about how Jason had Mom-ma and Daddy and Grandpa and Grandma and I have no one ... my heart broke for her ... and then Corabeth and Ormalee (sp?) and the way split screens were done.
My family and I sometimes watch two a day - you see we home school so I try and use what we can and then we usually have family devotions sometimes if there is a good moral lesson. The second one we watched was Year two The Chicken Thief ( I think that is what is was called) - it was a great lesson on how things are not always what they appear to be... or that is what my youngest said LOL.

I last watched The Sermon and The Prophecy, from Season Four. Television I adore as the family help John Boy to deliver his sermon. Grandma and Grandpa step up to the plate.. magical. And more tv to bask in; first family, and then friends help John Sr. realise he was rightly predicted to be the success that he has become. Acceptance is everything. mercantile

The Love Story... in which John Boy's heart is broken. Sad, but good episode.

The Sermon, once again, from Season Four, plus The Genius also from Season Four.
The bemused look on Ike's face as the one-armed bandit in his store is taken apart, then reassembled verbally, is priceless.

THE Odyssey season 2 Episode 2. What a beautiful episode and my favorite of the two Sissy Spacek episodes. I like it a lot better than the Townie in Season 1 . Sissy/Sarah Jane and John Boy Richard Thomas act so nice together up at the cabin and her childbirth was a true miracle we all should experience. John Boy handled it really well despite his inexperience lol I enjoy this episode WMFan

I was watching the Roots tonight from Season 2 and I decided to put my question here since its read more than the Season 2 section I think. Anyway this is the episode when Verdie met Harley and young Jodie and began to have feelings for them. Does anyone recall when Harley and Verdie got married or did we miss that or not show it. They were a great supporting couple to the show starting with the Roots band all the way into Season 9 the outrage and on into the movies. Just curious about when they were married. WMFan

I am waffling back and forth between Season 9 and Season 3 at the moment. Season 9 was given to me recently as a gift from my husband, so I am watching those episodes little by little. Some I had seen before; others are new to me or I vaguely remember bits and pieces of particular episodes. Prior to receiving Season 9, I had cycled through all of the DVDs I had and started over again (for the umpteenth time - many of you know the drill), so I am now up to Season 3 again. For Season 3 I just watched "The Runaway" yesterday. For Season 9 I recently viewed "The Indiscretion". I have to say I enjoy the earlier shows/season more. I am struggling to enjoy the episodes in Season 9.

I just watched the S3 episode "The Departure," where John gets bored with his life and goes to Norfolk to work. It was interesting to see that, despite the love of the mountains and family, even John gets frustrated with his state of life. Not a bad episode... I had seen the bar fight at the end, but I had never seen the full episode start-to-finish.
