That’s a good list. I was thinking along the same lines. Some people are just annoying, but they still have some good qualities. I was thinking of dishonest people, those who take unfair advantage of others and show no remorse.

The biggest problem with Vanessa Willard was that ridiculous accent she had. It was never heard on The Waltons before and was never heard afterwards. I admire Linda Purl as an actress, but I never expected that to come out of her mouth, especially when Curt, her own brother, didn't even have a hint of an accent.
Ralph Waite directed The Heartbreaker and I'm surprised he didn't tell Linda to 'tone it down'. I'm even more surprised that the accent survived the audition process.
I didn't really consider characters who ultimately had a turnaround or revelation or were not really in control of their behaviour. I'm thinking characters like Mr. Rudge (John-Boy's car), Kenny (the disturbed war vet), Smitty (the bigoted sailor who bullied the Mexican Eddie), or Calvin Satterfield.

Didn't Curt say he grew up in Wheeling Wv? That's 45 minutes from me and the people there don't talk like this.

^ I don't know where Curt grew up, but do you mean the people in Wheeling don't talk like Curt or Vanessa?

^ I don't know where Curt grew up, but do you mean the people in Wheeling don't talk like Curt or Vanessa? I do seem to recall Curt saying he grew up “on the wrong side of the tracks in Wheeling” or something like that. And I’ve never heard anyone from anywhere speak with an accent like Vanessas’s.

Linda reminded me of Priscilla Barnes after her 'Three's Company' days. She was in an episode of (I believe) Murder She Wrote and she played the part of a Texan. Her accent sounded very much like Linda's. I remember thinking, "I've heard a lot of Texans speaking, but I've never heard anyone sound like that."
My only guess is that they use a stereotypical accent rather than studying and learning the real thing.

That was the reason why I was dreading "The Heartbreaker" and I was right. Couldn't stand Vanessa or that fake accent. She sounded like those girls that would act purposely dumb in front of her guy friends or a guy she likes to impress them, only Southern-on-steroids style Same with Nancy, that one girl who got Ben in trouble in "The Lie" although different kind of character.

I'm surprised that Earl Hamner didn't have something to say about that horrendous accent. He of all people would have known how fake it was.

^ Indeed. There were a lot of people who could have stopped it. I don't know who would have had the final say, but it's the director who is responsible for the performance from his actors and, in this case, Ralph Waite was the director.
As I said earlier, it should have been stopped at the audition. She could have hired a speech coach to learn the accent.
