horselightning -- Of course I knew that you knew they were purposely dirty !!! What I meant was..... that they didn't seem to try very hard to use many other items of clothing to fit the times/situation, other than style.....

Perhaps they thought they would not have many items of clothing. i'm wondering why they wouild take a bath in a tub out back when they had indoor plumbing and tub inside? Was watchng the episode with Todd Bridges. BTW Jimbob looked like he was way to big and tall to fit in that little wash tub he was bathing in lol!

Back before the mid-1960s some blacks lived in our neighborhood in what was called servant quarters. They worked for the people who lived in the house and the blacks had their own house on the property. If they needed to use the bathroom, they had to go to their servant quarters, they could not go to the bathroom in the house.

I think those pants are one of the few items that were specifically intended to make the show appear more real -- usually the characters look so bright and shiny, it doesn't look like a true rural family going through the Depression..... Love 'em !
'Tho Elizabeth's socks weren't intentional, that's probably how the character's real socks would have looked !!
Just because a family is poor and lives in the mountains does not always mean that they are filthy dirty, that is not always true and one of the biggest misconceptions of poor rural folks to this day. I am sorry to say I am deeply hurt by such a remark and I am sure many others who grew up poor in large families in rural areas would be hurt as well.

Vintagekym, you're making accusations that are hurtful..... personal attacks are not permitted on this forum. I only meant that folks in rural areas are doing things that get them dirty -- farm animals, dusty roads, etc., etc. It's more of a struggle to keep everything clean. I well remember what it was like at my grandparents' farm and the constant washing of everything and everybody -- quite a challenge !
It was not like that living in the suburbs with a father who worked in a bank and a mother who was a nurse. All roads were paved and we even had sidewalks. Of course, we kids did like making mud pies !!!

He took a bath in tub out back. He seemed to be to big for bath in little tub. You ask me. I was just wondering why , because the Waltons have runnign water and tub inside?

Well Jeri I am sorry and apologize if you felt I was making a hurtful accusation, but that sentence where you said the characters socks would probably be dirty in real life just came off as hurtful, as if to say, that is how rural folks clothes or socks should and would always look. I didn't intend to personally attack, just stating a feeling I got when I read the sentence since I did not see any reference to how you thought her socks would have been "So Dirty" from dusty roads or farm animals.
I guess growing up poor and being made fun of makes me overly sensitive to remarks that rural poor folks should look and be dirty and that is how I took it. Again, I want to say I didnt mean to make a personal attack on you.
Horselightning, I was thinking maybe they bathed him outside because he smelled of beer and they didnt want to take him inside to offend Momma or Grandma with the alcohol odor of get into trouble for smelling like beer?

I have always felt the production crew was not very consistent with portraying the times and the place...... while you could see finger marks on door frames (which of course would be there if they weren't cleaned daily, almost hourly with that large brood !), the vehicles -- and I'm mostly referring to the truck -- always looked just washed. I mean, man, hauling lumber down dirt roads.... and it always looked pretty spotless, even when just returning from a delivery !!!
And, did you ever see sawdust in John's or Zeb's hair ??!!
