^ The same thing happened with the sugar industry and diabetes. You wouldn't believe what the sugar industry went through to convince the governments that sugar was a safe, healthy 'food' and had nothing to do with obesity or diabetes. Scary stuff. Is that when all those sugar substitutes came about?

I had trouble deciding to post this here or under the commercial thread.

I had trouble deciding to post this here or under the commercial thread. I really think we need these types of commercials in every country playing all the time.

What is weird about Saccharin is when I googled what it says in long term use it can cause obesity and diabetes, as well as liver and renal impairment. I find that really bizarre because obesity and diabetes is what the concern about sugar was in the first place.

I'm not sure if cigarettes being advertised on TV ended before I was born. But I'm 56 and I don't recall ever seeing a cigarette ad on TV. I am around the same age as you. I will be turning 56 in July of this year. I also don't recall ever seeing cigarette ads on television, but I do remember while in high school many of my classmates smoked. I guess not having the ads didn't help very much.

The space between the main school building and the building that held the gym on the top floor and cafeteria in the basement was always filled with kids smoking between classes.

I remember the smoking ads on TV and I also recall that Tom Selleck (along with his moustache) was an extremely popular Marlboro Man.
Here is a rare photo of Tom without his lip hair:

We had a similar area that was off to the side of the cafeteria area. That bell rang after the classes and the kids flocked to that area to suck down that cigarette. If it was done in that area the teachers didn't care one bit.
