I watched the reunion movie Mothers Day on Waltons Mountain and did not like the fact that Aimee Godsey smoked. That got me thinking of the times in the series when the characters smoked. There was Ben who was taught the lesson by Grandpa. Mary Ellen was smoking in the barn with Job in The Dust Bowl Cousins which got her 15 Bible Scriptures to memorize from Olivia. John Boy caught the entire top of the house on fire because he was smoking a pipe and left it unattended and others smoking at the Dew Drop Inn.
On regular TV today meaning on regular channels we rarely see smoking at all on the shows. On streaming channels and other cable type channels we do see it sometimes showed like in shows like Stranger Things which is set in the 1980's and even other shows, but it seems like it is a lot less and I think that is really smart. To me the media is a huge way of getting this nasty habit out to teens my age. I do know kids my age will still find ways to do it or vape because a peer is doing it or something like that, but at least we are not seeing it as much on TV like back in the day and The Waltons seemed like a show that didn't show it much at all which is great.

I'm not sure if cigarettes being advertised on TV ended before I was born. But I'm 56 and I don't recall ever seeing a cigarette ad on TV.

I googled it and it said the President Nixon signed legislation on April 1, 1970 banning cigarette ads on TV and Radio. So if I am doing the math correctly that is almost 53 years ago. So even when the Waltons TV series started there were no cigarette commercials even though they showed it from time to time on the actual show.

I guess it's understandable I don't recall it.

I never paid much attention to cigarette ads as a kid. Actually I didn't pay attention to any of the ads on TV or radio. My mind just filtered them out as background noise. Sadly they used to have cigarette ads even during cartoons

I remember cigarette ads on tv when I was growing up. I can still remember many of the slogans and jingles they used on their commercials. If you watch the early episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, you’ll see Andy occasionally light up a cigarette.

Judy mentioned in one of her videos that, in episodes of people (minors?) smoking, fake tobacco was used. She couldn't remember what it was, but it was harmless herself and Eric. I don't know about John-Boy's pipe. (I don't remember any other Walton children smoking.)

Several years ago, when I was still teaching, I had my little first graders gathered around me for a read-aloud story time. It was December, and the book was The Night Before Christmas, an illustrated book featuring Clement Moore’s classic poem. They sat there listening and looking at the pictures as I held them up. When I got to the page that said, “The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath,” one serious little boy interrupted, and the conversation went something like this: Little Boy: “Wait a minute. Santa Claus smokes?!?” Me: “He smokes a pipe.” Little Boy: “But I thought smoking was bad for you. Why would he smoke?” Me: “This was a long time ago. They didn’t know smoking was bad for you then, but they do now. I don’t think he smokes anymore.” The innocence of childhood. I’ve heard that newer versions of the book have left out the part about Santa smoking a pipe.

Wow, they even used The Flintstones to promote cigarettes. What type of age group were they trying to reach back then. I love The Flintstones.
Yep, I have watched some of the Andy Griffith shows and saw him smoking. He always seemed to have like 1 cigarette in his front pocket.
I think they do that with smoke sort of fake tobacco or even now if they can make it look really real electronic cigarettes. I think Zendaya when she was filming the movie "Euphoria"said she smoked these herbal cigarettes with no bad stuff in them and they were still horrible tasting. I also think Hailee Steinfeld did the same thing when she was filming "Dickinson".
I never thought about Santa and him smoking a pipe, but that is so cute for your little student to think of that. I kind of get why the older generation might still smoke even though it is not healthy and they all know it. The stuff in them is very addictive and hard to stop and if someone has smoked for a very long time it could be really hard to stop. Those young people even my age and a bit older, it doesn't make any sense why in the world they would start smoking or even vaping at all. For the younger generation in my opinion the percentage of people who smoke or vape should be zero.

The Flintstones, when originally aired, came on in the evening, so grownups watched as well as kids.

OMG!!!!! I bet Doctors today hate that commercial. When it says , "See how Camels agree with your throat." Yeah it is agreeing to give you Throat Cancer and other Cancers and breathing problems.

^ The same thing happened with the sugar industry and diabetes. You wouldn't believe what the sugar industry went through to convince the governments that sugar was a safe, healthy 'food' and had nothing to do with obesity or diabetes. Scary stuff.
