Just wondering . . . Grandma and Olivia are such strict Baptists - very moral and Bible- oriented. But I guess they think dancing is okay? There certailty is lots of dancing on the program, and they both "cut a rug" with the best of them.

Olivia was upset with John Boy entering The Marathon with Daisy but she seems to have no problem with barn dances as she attended them with the rest of the family.

I'm not too good on what various branches of religion deem suitable but is it possible that Olivia felt that The Marathon was some kind of gambling but social dances (ie Barn dances) are recreation.

What I wonder is if baptists who arent allowed to go to dances are allowed to dance with their spouses in the privacy of their own bedroom ? Think about that. Is their a rule about that ?

I would think what a married couple does in their bedroom is their personal business not the church's. No one would ever know outside of the couple themselves.

Our religion does not condone dancing except for a married couple in a private setting. No one else can see you dance except for your spouse & naturally that means you can only dance with your spouse. (If you choose to dance at all). No proms, no homecoming school dance, etc....Over the years our kids have come home telling us that the P.E. teacher was having the class do some kind of dance: in line dancing, square dancing, etc... So either my husband or I go down to the school & tell them that our child will not be participating because of our religious beliefs. We have never had any problems with them letting our child sit out. Also when our kids have reached their junior year in high school, the school wants the class to raise money for the prom. Our child does not help raise any money for that, they do not help decorate for the prom nor do they attend the prom. Our families do not have sit down meals & dancing at any wedding. You just attend the marriage ceremony, then go to the reception which consists of the wedding cake, grooms cake, nuts, mints (sometimes some fruit like strawberries & grapes) & punch (non-alcoholic ;D ). The groom throws the garter, the bride throws the bouquet, throw bird seed at the couple & wave them goodbye on their honeymoon. Nothing wrong with having a sit down meal at a wedding. Our families have just either never had that kind of money to spend or would rather use it to help buy a house, car, keep in savings, etc... Everyone has their own beliefs, morals, values, etc.....so I am not judging anyone & I am not trying to offend anyone. I am just stating some of our belief system.

forever..... when you say "our", who are you referring to ?? Southern Baptists, which is different from other Baptist sects/groups.... ??
LATER: I looked it up and here's what the SBC (Southern Baptist Convention) has to say --
"The Southern Baptist Convention has not taken an official stance on these matters. Because each church is autonomous, each issue is addressed and determined by the local church. 10. What is the SBC's stance on the KJV Bible? 11. What is the SBC's stance on requirements for church membership? 12. What is the SBC's stance on who may partake of the Lord's Supper? 13. What is the SBC's stance on dancing? 14. What is the SBC's stance on a church having elders? 15. What is the SBC's stance on raising money in bake sales or bazaars? " .....
So, I guess foreverwaltons was talking about her specific, individual congregation.....

Hi, Nothing to do with The Waltons but I read today that Oxford University has been awarded £500.000 (not sure exact but around $750.000) to digitise it's Baptist books. I thought our Baptist friends would like to know.

Kelvin, Do you know if this is part of the program of Oxford University Press to eventually digitize all of the text books it prints?
I tried finding an announcement online but had no luck....
Thanks.

So I guess the take home answer is some Baptists dance and some don't. It was obviously okay in The Walton's Mountain church, since the Rev Hank Buchanan danced up a storm with Erin in his debut episode.

I grew up in what I would call a "strict Baptist" church, and no, we didn't dance. It wasn't a Southern Baptist church, it was an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church.
Now I go to a "not-so-strict" non-denominational church, and I think dancing is probaby allowed. I've never heard anyone speak against it, but I did attend the wedding of the pastor's daughter, and there was dancing.
It makes no difference to me. I can't dance!

Hi, I'm not judging or thinking anyone is wrong for what they believe, I just have a question. What is bad about dancing? I'm asking out of pure curiosity. I think I have heard that people believe that dancing can lead to other things...is that correct? If you are married, why can no one watch you dance? Please don't take offense to my questions, I am just really curious.

Which bible verse talks about dancing and that it is okay?
They used it in the original Footloose movie to frame their argument for dancing.

A quick Google indicates there are 19 Bible verses which mention dancing..... however, it appears that the meaning of "dancing" in the Bible is more like "frolicking" ..... the verses refer to individual people -- not couples dancing together.....
The present-day concept of sexually provocative holding of the opposite sex, or of mimicking human sexual acts while dancing, are a far cry from what these biblical passages illustrate -- and therein lies the controversy / differing opinions.....

what a topic, eh?
Forever Waltons, What would your reaction be if one of your kids went to a dance marathon like John-Boy did ?
I am just curious. I'm not judging...
