Which bible verse talks about dancing and that it is okay? They used it in the original Footloose movie to frame their argument for dancing. [/quote I thought about that too Scarlett. I am actually trying to remember if they were a baptist community in that movie.

I think the Walton parents and grandparents were okay with dancing. In The Separation I think it was, grandpa and grandma talk about dancing before they were married. However, Livy didn't approve of the kind of dancing that was going on in the burlesque house Jason was playing the piano in during season 6.

I looked on google and found these. Psalm 149:3 ESV Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre! Psalm 150:1-6 ESV Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! ... Ecclesiastes 3:4 ESV A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; Psalm 149:1-9 ESV Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly! Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King! Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre! For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation. Let the godly exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their beds. ... Psalm 150:3-5 ESV Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Here is where I found them. www.openbible.info/topics/dance

forever..... when you say "our", who are you referring to ?? Southern Baptists, which is different from other Baptist sects/groups.... ?? LATER: I looked it up and here's what the SBC (Southern Baptist Convention) has to say -- "The Southern Baptist Convention has not taken an official stance on these matters. Because each church is autonomous, each issue is addressed and determined by the local church. 10. What is the SBC's stance on the KJV Bible? 11. What is the SBC's stance on requirements for church membership? 12. What is the SBC's stance on who may partake of the Lord's Supper? 13. What is the SBC's stance on dancing? 14. What is the SBC's stance on a church having elders? 15. What is the SBC's stance on raising money in bake sales or bazaars? " ..... So, I guess foreverwaltons was talking about her specific, individual congregation..... JeriJet.....Our religion is Conservative Church of Christ. Most Church of Christs now are Liberal. Alot of people think all Church of Christs are the same just like most think all Baptist, Holiness, etc... are alike.

what a topic, eh? Forever Waltons, What would your reaction be if one of your kids went to a dance marathon like John-Boy did ? I am just curious. I'm not judging... Curiosity can be a good thing! If I found out that one of my kids went to a dance marathon while living under my roof, I would be very disappointed in them. My heart would be heavy because they had gone against their upbringing. Naturally by disobeying they would have consequences to pay & they would have to gain my trust back. (I say this because our kids have to get our permission to go somewhere, they have to tell us where they will be, who they will be with, what they plan to do & have a curfew). So if they said, I am going to a dance marathon, they would not get permission to go, so if they went to one that means they lied to us about where they would be & what they would be doing. So there lies the trust issue. Now if they went to a dance marathon after they left my home.....then I can only remind them why they should not do that. My heart would still be heavy even though they are now an adult. My husband & I can only raise our children the best that we can with the Bible's help & hope as the Bible says, "when they get old, they will not depart from it." But when your child gets out in the real world on their own.....they make their own decisions about how they will conduct their lives.

A quick Google indicates there are 19 Bible verses which mention dancing..... however, it appears that the meaning of "dancing" in the Bible is more like "frolicking" ..... the verses refer to individual people -- not couples dancing together..... The present-day concept of sexually provocative holding of the opposite sex, or of mimicking human sexual acts while dancing, are a far cry from what these biblical passages illustrate -- and therein lies the controversy / differing opinions..... You are starting to hit it on the nail head, JeriJet! The way most people dress (or should I say LACK of dress) & sexually provocative holding of the opposite sex (or same sex) & mimicking of sexual acts while dancing, etc...are definitely a far cry from just a few decades ago, much less biblical times! Especially with the young kids/teenagers of today. Tell me, if there is nothing wrong with the kids/teenagers dancing together, then why do they have chaperones?? There aren't any chaperones at the skating rink, fast food places, restaurants, bowling alleys, etc....The only two places I can think of is: at a dance for kids/teenagers & the movies. Why? Because it's dark in the movie theater & the dancing gets the kids all worked up (if you know what I mean ).

JeriJet. I'm not sure but whatever the reason and no matter what denomination writings must be preserved for the future. The thing I saw specifically mentioned Baptist material so that's why I mentioned it here with this thread.

My curiosity was budget-related..... wondered if the est. $750 thousand was to fund the digitization of just the Baptist Books or covered the Oxford Press's program in general and what their annual budgeted costs might be..... Of course, I'm in favor of literary preservation of anything and everything !!

I think I heard correctly and it was for The Baptist books. As for other costs for their libraries nothing was said.

I'm good at driving myself crazy over such stuff -- I'm trying to figure out what is meant by "The Baptist Books" but the more research I do, the more confused I get. Was wondering if the Oxford University Press had merely printed "them" -- or if "they" were part of the extensive libraries of the University. Went to the Bodeliaen website and no luck ('tho haven't searched each and every library). I've gone from subject to subject and can't come up with an answer .... can't find anything called The Baptist Books, though it may refer to many publications and someone, somewhere, has "grouped" them...... Wish I could stop this .... I'll try to .... but, if anyone on the forum has info, would love to hear it..... Thanks.

Hi jJeriJet, for myself I believe this refers to their collection of Baptist works. If so they would have been amassed over a substantial period of time of course. There must be a definitive answer to your questions somewhere but where I regret I do not know. Good luck with your research

Good luck with your research Just one more quick question -- do you recall if what you read referred to collections of the University libraries, or of the University Press department specifically .... ?? My mom was a Baptist, joined by my father along the line ... and, since her passing many years ago, I am seemingly overly interested in anything related to this loving, wonderful woman.....
