I remember when RT first left the Waltons, he seemed to be embarrassed that he played John Boy.
Does anybody know if he liked the show in the begining or if he always felt that it was beneath him but was something to pay the bills?

I'm sure he had a blast working on the waltons. It's just that usually when celebs get offered bigger roles they look back at how they started out and see mistakes in there acting that they have improved on now, even if we don't see it. Plus with the huge success of the show it was hard to shake that 'good-boy' image so if he was ever offered the role of some criminal murderer or something most people would still see him as john-boy which ultimately could effect his career at not being able to play other roles and stero-types. The reason why Richard Thomas left the Waltons because his contract expired after he signed 5 year deal.

He chose not to renew.

He admit that, for the first few years after he left the cast of the Waltons, he was easily peeved.

What makes you think he was embarrassed?

Did he say he was easily peeved? I had never heard that before. I wonder if I'll ever get over missing the Walton's. They're my valium in this crazy, stressed-out world.

Here's a small sample of the foward in my copy of Good John-Boy: "Say, 'Goodnight John-Boy'!"
I've been hearing it for thirty years. In the street, in resturants, yelled by hard-hatted workers on new york city construction sites even over the phone from telemarketers who recognized my voice. Once, just before the first-act curtain of a broadway play, it sailed from the back of the house, over the audience and landed directly on the stage at my feet. It got the biggest laugh of the night.
One might consider this grounds for grudge-keeping, and I will admit that, for the first few years after I had left the cast of The waltons, I was easily PEEVED. After all, I'd moved on, why couldn't millions of other americans?"RYAN J.

Okay, I see what you mean. He wanted to be respected as an actor in general and not just as John Boy. Thanks...

I think the 'Waltons' series is his claim to fame. I sure didn't see or hear much of him after that. A cameo roll every here and there, but no starring rolls in blockbuster movies. I think he played an incredible part in John Boy. I just can't see anyone doing that part justice like he did. He was sorely missed the season after he left...it was never the same.

Richard appeared on such programs as "Roots:The Next Generations",in which he played a Caucasian man who married an African American woman and was disowned by his father (played by Henry Fonda, who starred in "Spencer's Mountain") as a result. He also did some big screen work in movies such as "Battle Beyond The Stars",which was an attempt to capitalize on the success of the "Star Wars" movies. He has starred on many made for TV and made for cable movies. I'd say Richard has done well for himself IMO along with his stage work. There was a time when Richard wanted to distance himself from John Boy but now he seems to fully embrace the role and has accepted it as part of his life and the role that made him a star.
