Sometimes when an actor creates a character that is so ingrained in our memories and in time, they never really shake loose of that image. I think this happened with Richard Thomas. It's almost like people don't want to see him as anything but John Boy...which is a testament to the incredible work he did on The Waltons and establishing the character of John Boy as a cultural icon. I mean, could we ever watch a movie with Melissa Gilbert and not think about half-pint? Ron Howard - same thing. He's never in front of the camera. We just don't want our iconic childhood characters to grow up. For the actor it's a probably a blessing and curse all wrapped up in one, but Richard Thomas has nothing to apologize for with the amazing body of work he performed in The Waltons.

Yes, I think that Richard Thomas has become a very well respected actor, who has tackled all sorts of terrific roles too. I am looking forward to seeing him on stage in a few short weeks. I have great respect for him as an actor.
I think with regard to his thoughts on John Boy, I suspect that as an actor, he would like to be acclaimed for his many roles in his body of work, rather than just for one role he played so many years ago. It's also not unusual to feel that way either. I have heard many actors groan when people bring up how much they enjoyed them in a particular role so many years ago.
