Yes,I believe Eileen is Mary's sister. Mary's brother Michael McDonough also guest starred at least once on "The Waltons".

Hey Tonyray,
No, Eileen McDonough is not Mary's sister. Although she shares the same last name, there is no relation. I know this because I had the same question, asked mom (Carolyn) and she called Mary for me. Sometimes it is very nice to have that connection and comes in very handy.
Michael McDonough is, in fact Mary's brother, however. I believe Mary has three brothers. and one sister. Perhaps Mary can come on board and clarify this, but this is my understanding.
Hope that helps, Dianne

Thanks Mary & Dianne for the info I was watching The Great Motorcycle Race and though that's not Patsy Brimmer so looked at the end for the name of the girl played her and notice the last name. Thanks again for the info.

Patsy Brimmer number one in The Wedding, season 5 episode 8.
Patsy Brimmer number two in The Great Motorcycle Race, season 5 episode 10.
These episodes aired two weeks apart with two different actresses playing the same character.

There was no continuity in the two actresses that played Patsy Brimmer. Debbie Gunn played Patsy Brimmer in four episodes. Eileen McDonough played Patsy Brimmer in two episodes. She passed away in 2012, two months before her 50th birthday. Debbie Gunn: The Wedding: Part 1 (1976 - Season 5 Episode 7) Debbie Gunn: The Wedding: Part 2 (1976 - Season 5 Episode 8) Eileen McDonough: The Great Motorcycle Race (1976 - Season 5 Episode 10) Debbie Gunn: The Best Christmas (1976 - Season 5 Episode 12) Eileen McDonough: The Hero (1977 - Season 5 Episode 19) Debbie Gunn: Spring Fever (1978 - Season 6 Episode 15) Eileen also played Murray Slaughter's daughter, Ellen, in a 1975 episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show before appearing on The Waltons. And, would you look at who played her sister, Bonnie, in a prior 1973 episode of the MTM show ... Tammi Bula (Marcia Woolery on The Waltons)!

I did a list of all the characters that were played by multiple actors. This doesn't include "The Homecoming" or babies who were played by twins. In order of first appearance:
John-Boy (obviously) Vernon Rutley (the junkman) A J Covington (the writer guy who John-Boy idolised) Fanny Tatum Curtis Norton (they obviously couldn't get Ned Beatty back!) Jody Foster (3 actors) Red Turner Col. Seth Linville (Serena's father) Dean Beck (there was much confusion about the dons at the college, with different actors swapping roles etc.) Nurse Nora Taylor (3 actresses) (she was the horseback district nurse) Buck Vernon Curt Willard (as well all know...) Patsy Brimmer (as mentioned here) Aimee Godsey (the nice one and the tramp one!) Josh Foster (3 actors) Aunt Kate (Olivia's aunt) John Curtis Joe Murdock (the lumber competitor to John) Cindy Ashley Longworth Jr. Ronnie Cotter (hillfolk) Sweet Billy (hillfolk) Virginia "Ginny" Walton
Have I missed any?
