Finished the DVD series and started back again with Season 1. While watching the episodes in Season 1, I noticed that Olivia/Michael Learned wore her hair slightly different in the first year - more like a bun/knot/chignon instead of a french twist. That bun/knot in the back often looks like a different shade/colour from the rest of her hair. I wonder if it was a clip-on piece? Any thoughts? And someone please comb Mary Ellen's hair!

I definitely thought it was a "piece". Also, I think they colored her hair so it looked more reddish in the early years. I guess to make her more believable as the mother of all those red headed kids, There was a scene early on in the bedroom where John even referred to being married to a red headed woman. By the end of the series, she had become a blonde.

I never did like her hair red,it didn't look natural to me,I liked Olivia better as a blonde.

Both the Livy and John characters changed alot after the first and maybe the second season? They spiffed up Livy with blonde hair, different style and pulled up off her ears, plus she lost some weight and became a real fox! John cleaned up abit too and both of them changed their style of speaking. I just started watching the series over again and watched the Calf this evening. Livy said John's word was the rule in the house and she was pretty meek with him. Also John called Livy and Esther 'cackling old hens' in the first or second season and that just didn't fit...

One of the TV channels here in the UK has recently started showing the Waltons from series 1 again.
I watched The Dust Bowl Cousins this morning and I noticed John was smoking a pipe. I don't remember seeing him do that in later episodes

Her hairstyle was different in a way. It was more of a twist rather than an actual "bun". I kind of liked it, it suited her face. Anyone fond of her style later in the series when she wore it in a short pony tale? I kind of liked that as well. Later on she had a perm....
I do wonder if it was a hair piece... never thought about it until now!

I don't remember seeing him do that in later episodes I think that was the only time he smoked! He smoked in The Celebration when he was outside Ike's store because the bank person gave it to him. I honestly think it wasn't a hair piece because in a Gunsmoke episode she had long hair and it was sort of a reddy brown colour. I love her though and i like her hair better long instead of the short ponytail i just don't think it suits her.

I have noticed with my own hair that, the three times I've let it grow long and worn it in various "buns"... the longer hair is a different shade -- probably oxidizes or something the longer it's been around.... Also, a lot probably has to do with how much sun you get, and how certain parts are coiled up and hidden beneath.... I had a "piece" made once and learned that in early wig-making, they had a problem with dyed hair being the same color from one end to the other....

When it showed her with that long braid... it was obviously not real. I also noticed when her hair was real long and she was brushing it out, that she would hold on to the top part.. like it was what we used to call a 'fall' that was hooked in...which it was.

Liv's hair in the first season or two was exactly how my Mom wore her hair during the same period of time! -- except in the summer Mom would make two braids and make sort of a "crown" on top of her head.... When I was trying out a french twist for a while in the early 60's and sought Mom's help, she said that it was considered too formal for every-day wear in the 30's, so I am surprised The Waltons had Liv wear the twist....
When Dad was away in the navy during WWII, Mom got a short haircut as a surprise for his return -- didn't work out very well for her !!!

I've read Michael Learnards biography and she supposedly grew up in Switzerland and went to school in England. I always wondered where she got that west Virginia drawl. I've seen her in other things and it seems to be real.

I watched the Bicycle last night and am so glad they changed John Sr's personality. He was frowning on Livy riding a bike and worried about what people would say. That was not a man that I would have liked alot. Love the NEW John though!
