I watched the show as a child in the 70s and early 80s, and hadn't seen it in years until the DVD releases. My memory is that the neighbors on Walton's Mountain were major characters who appeared frequently. However, up through the first 3 or 4 seasons on DVD, only Ike and the Baldwin Sisters show up with any regularity (and even with the Baldwins, that's only a few episodes per season). Was I just remembering incorrectly, or do later seasons feature the supporting cast more often? Seems to me that I wouldn't have been able to remember the likes of Verdie and Harley, Yancy Tucker, Flossie Brimmer, Maude Gormley, GW, and Sheriff Bridges to name a few if they hadn't have had more appearances as the show progressed. They've all appeared at least once, but they've hardly become the memorable characters I recall from watching the show as a kid.

And yes, I'm aware that Corabeth didn't join the show until the end of the 3rd season. But even in the 4th season, the Godsey's haven't thus far played a very promient role.

There were a couple of people who only made one or two guest appearances---Ronnie Howard appeared as Seth and he died of leukemia on The Gift. AJ Covington appeared on The Literary Man and then although John boy says at the end we would not see him again, he came back three years almost to the date--November 1972 to November 1975 when he appeared on The Abdication. Richard Mazur made one appearence as Tom Povich in The System. Daisy Garner appeared three times--The Marathon, The Achivement, and The Revelation. Then her daughter Melissa whom we first met on The Revelation came for a visit and gave Corabeth the willies because she did not want Amy to play with a 'love child.'Hazel Lamphere made one apearance only in The Idol.

I don't know - it seems that they show the neighbors a lot throughout the series. I do remember Ep Bridges being in the very first episode and the very last episode and of course Mr. Godsey too. Ike and Cora Beth are probably shown the most throughout the series with the Baldwins coming in second. And I believe that Verdie, Ep and Yancy are featured in every season. Tracey - this sounds like a new game for you... how many episodes the neighbors are featured in and the name of the episode?

Yes this would be a perfect game for me but it will take the whole website down if I tell you how many episodes and name of the episode for each neighbors but I won't do it but I'll be happy to tell you who had the most episodes and the answer is Ike with the total of 171 along with Corabeth 107, Miss Mamie 65, Miss Emily 66, Flossie Brimmer 27, Rev Fordwick and Yancy Tucker 18, Rosemary Hunter 15, Maude Gormley 14, Dr Vance 11, G W Haines 11, Verdie 17, Doc McIvers 5 episodes, Zulieka Dunbar 5, Rose Burton 38.

Thanks for the numbers, Tracey. That sort of confirms what I'm talking about- that a lot of those neighbors were only in a handful of episodes throughout the whole series. In a series with nearly 200 episodes, 17 appearances from Yancy isn't very many at all. I'm surprised that I remember him so vividly as I do. I had thought he was a much more prominent character than that. Same with Verdie. Maybe their appearances were more concentrated in later seasons, which is why I remember them?

You know what - you are right. Some of the characters are so vivid in our memories that we think they were in more episodes than they actually appeared in. I knew Ike would have the most along with Cora Beth. Tracey - you are amazing... you know your Waltons!
Since Miss Emily was featured in one more episode than Miss Maime, do you know which one it is? Tracey - I know you have to know that answer. My guess is the Spirit - in Season 8 Jeffrey befriends an escape German prisoner during the Christmas season.
Tracey - you did not list Ep. Do you know how many episodes he was in? I am going to take a wild guess and say 32. I have no clue though.

You know why I was correct - I tend to favor the Christmas episodes... The Spirit is one of my favorites in the later seasons. Ok Tracey - how about Miss Fanny? I am going to guess and say she was in 9 episodes. I know she was in the Best Christmas!

She was only in 5 episodes: The Virgil The Best Christmas The Career Girl The Hawk The Return The character of Fanny Tatum played by Dorothy Neuman in Season 1 "The Actress". The character returns as a semi regular from Season 5 but is played by Sheila Allen.

Two things- I think it's to the credit of the actors and the writers that we remember these characters, no matter how infrequently they actually appeared. Second, I'm betting that they did show up more often in later episodes to fill out some of the roles as the adult leads left the show. My memory of later seasons would certainly be better than of these earlier earlier seasons that I'm only now remembering as I watch them on DVD. I think the first episode I actually remember watching first run was the one when Olivia and the two young kids are lost in the woods. That's season 4 I think? Haven't even gotten to that particular episode on DVD yet.
