The Waltons seem to live close to the school and the kids could probably make it to school in most of the weather. Any idea if the school had mandatory amount of classroom days like they do now, or in such rural areas as long as you made it to class most days, you could still graduate?

Concessions were made for a farming community, especially during the Depression. I think it was more a matter of grades and tests than attendance.

I guess in most farming communities like The Waltons Mountain School that there weren't that many students in the entire school. How many students do you think were in the school when John Boy was in his last year? I would say somewhere between 25 and 30. It also had to be difficult for Miss Hunter to teach as all the grades from Elizabeth's age to John Boy's age were in the same classroom. So she had to provide multiple lessons for each group. If there were only 25 to 30 students in the entire school and students during that time were allowed to miss from time to time that would take a pretty big percentage out of the entire school and maybe even an entire grade may not be represented, especially the older students. I would think that would make it really hard for her to teach effectively.

^ If you wish to know more about it, Google one room school houses.
That was the norm for a very, very long time.

I will do that. What is weird I think is some of my own classes when I was going to middle school had 25 students in one class. It looked like at times that the entire Waltons Mountain School had 25 students in it.

Your town must be really small. The Middle School I was just in before I went to doing online had over 1,500 students from 6th to 8th grades. The high school is even larger.

I think in the late 1800s schools in rural areas would close for a few weeks during harvest.

I do hope if I like doing this online school that I get a say in if I want to continue with it next year and in the future. Not like I was told I was being taken out of my public school for the rest of my 7th grade year and completing it online by my new Psychiatrist, Therapist, and Mom.

My high school had over 3,000 students and my graduating class had over 800 students. I didn't even know everyone in my class, never mind anyone outside of my graduating class.
I loved my school. The size didn't bother me one little bit. Best years of my life. 💗

Yeah, you do get less students and sickness. My school has lots and lots of kids, I don't even count.
