"Oh what's for dinner Kathy?" " Oh I am cooking up some cleaning supplies."

My grandfathers remedy for a cough, much to the horror of Mama was a couple teaspoons of peppermint schnapps for a cough. He had a cat and we were allergic to cat dander. So consequently, we'd all end up coughing. Pa would dose out his remedy. Ahh....happy times down on the farm! My grandmother would dole out blackberry brandy if you, shall we say, had an ongoing urgent need for the bathroom. :0Oh, yes. My great aunt would say that was the remedy for the "trots"! Mind I was a youngster when she said this. After coming from the farm, I thought it had something to do with horses!

My husband grew up with a home remedy his mother made for canker sores; "burnt alum." He had me make it for some years after we were first married. I would take alum that was in the old spice tins and cook it over low heat in a small pan until it was 'burnt.' We kept the powder in an old medicine bottle for use when a canker sore appeared. I also find Ginger Ale (like Kathy Lee) the best thing for an upset stomach. This isn't a home remedy, but my dad swore there was nothing better for an upset stomach than Pepto Bismol. To this day I can't bear to down a tablespoon of that stuff because I have such terrible memories of opening my mouth for a tablespoon of it! All of us kids were given Pepto when we were sick..... as well as the dogs. Yes, the dogs in our family! My dad's Pepto Bismol routine was such a standard joke in our family that it even made it into his eulogy.

During the 1918 Flu pandemic my great grandmother swore by onions as protection from it. She kept them on every windowsill of the house and whenever she or my great grandfather had to leave the house they carried them in their pockets. My grandmother and her older brother, the only 2 of their 7 kids who were born at the time were babies and weren't taken out of the house at all. I don't know whether the onions were responsible or not but no one in that household got the flu.

Rinse out the mouth with Salt water for canker sores,
Garlic and mustard for congestion
Also, I've heard that if you slice an onion into a circle and slide it into your sock (so its against the bottom of your foot) when you're sick, it will draw out the toxins in your body and drastically cut down on the time spent sick.
There's a video of this on youtube.com somewhere.

I had forgotten about that, my maternal grandmother always said that this worked. She always made sure that her calendar had the signs on it - throat, foot, etc. Whenever she heard that we had a dentist appointment or some such thing scheduled, she would consult her calendar. If the 'sign' was right she had no problem with it, if it didn't have the correct 'sign' she would try her best to talk us into rescheduling. She used the 'signs' to know when to plant certain crops too.
I always meant to get with her and write it all down. I thought there would always be tomorrow and unfortunately she died before I took the time to sit down with her about it.

I love the memories you have with your grandma. Don't kick yourself about the things you didn't write down. If you wrote down everything you gained from her being your grandma... you could write a book!
