Do any of you use home remedies?
My maternal grandmother always made a potato poultice when you had a sore/cut finger, toe, or such. It draws the infection to the surface. I still make and use them. I'll never forget when Mr. Forever and I was dating and one of his fingers was bothering him. I made a potato poultice and put on it. When we took it off, all of the infection had come to the surface. Pricked it with a pin and drained it. Immediate relief and no more soreness. He thought I was a miracle worker. LOL!
Don't know if this really counts but grew up doing it because of my maternal grandmother and momma. I still do it and have Mr. Forever and the foreverettes do it too. If we have a sore throat or our tonsils are bothering us. I get a glass of as hot water that you can stand and put lots of salt in it and stir it up. Then gargle as long as you can take it, then spit it out. Repeat until the glass is empty. Throat and/or tonsils always feel better afterwards.
We did the salt water gargling thing too. Also, my mother used to go to a local soda fountain and get Coca Cola syrup, which she would give us a teaspoon of when we had an upset stomach. Over time, she started getting regular coke and mixing it with a fork until all the bubbles come out and it's flat. To this day I do that if I have an upset stomach.

How do you make a potato poultice?
Get some gauze or a strip of fabric. Peel and cut a small piece of a potato. Cut/chop it up really fine. Put it in the middle of the gauze or fabric. Then put a lot of salt on top of the finely cut potato. Place the potato part on the body part in question and wrap, tie or tape the gauze/fabric in place. Leave it on for an hour for something small and about two hours for something much bigger, then remove and throw it all away. If there was an infection under the skin, the pus will now be drawn to the surface. Prick it with a pin and drain it. If it was just 'sore', the soreness should be gone. Talking about a sore finger or toe not a sore calf, thigh or such.
If you have a boil on your body, the potato poultice will draw the 'gunk' out of it too.

I love the home remedies when the appear on the show and Grandma's bravery through experience while administering them. I'll remember your cold sore/ice suggestion. Here's another - with a mosquito (or bug) bite put ash on it. The ash will draw out the venom. I will try that this summer. But I live in New Jersey and we have way too many mosquitoes! So I will look like I have dark measles from all the ash spots I will have on me!

Do any of you use home remedies? When I was a child and had a cold, my mother would put us to bed, heap on the blankets, and give us tea with a little whiskey. We would sweat out the cold. It always worked and we would be fine in the morning. Read an article recently that said to soak in a hot tub for twenty minutes when you have a cold. It raises the body temperature and kills off the cold virus. For female problems down there, douche with warm water and a little baking soda. It restores the body's PH to normal. Works better then Monostat.

How do you make a potato poultice? I like ginger ale for an upset stomach. Always seems to settle my stomach. My grandfathers remedy for a cough, much to the horror of Mama was a couple teaspoons of peppermint schnapps for a cough. He had a cat and we were allergic to cat dander. So consequently, we'd all end up coughing. Pa would dose out his remedy. Ahh....happy times down on the farm!

I once read a book about home remedies and found it to be helpful. One home remedy was if you felt a cold sore coming to put ice on it. This has always worked for me!
Do you remember home remedies being used on "The Waltons"?
I don't remember the episode but Zeb or Esther said something about using a mustard poultice. I believe it was Zeb that was using it.
My great grandparents, from what I was told, would use an onion and mustard plaster for chest colds. Yikes! Personally, by the sounds of it, I think it did more to keep people away from you so you could rest more so than having any real medicinal application.

My grandmother would dole out blackberry brandy if you, shall we say, had an ongoing urgent need for the bathroom. :0

I have got to try that. I know a friend that used potatoes for ear aches. She would heat a slice of potato in the microwave until very warm. Then wrap the slice in gauze or thin cotton and have a person lay down with his/her ear on the warm slice. She said it worked for a clogged/sore ear every time!
