I once read a book about home remedies and found it to be helpful. One home remedy was if you felt a cold sore coming to put ice on it. This has always worked for me!
Do you remember home remedies being used on "The Waltons"?

I don't remember the episode but Zeb or Esther said something about using a mustard poultice. I believe it was Zeb that was using it.

Don't know if it was a mustard poultice but Grandma put a homemade remedy on a cloth and put it on The Fighter's (Cleavon Little) forehead to draw out the pain after being KO'ed.

My Grandma used to have a book with different remedies- wish we still had it!
One of my goals is to get a medicinal herb garden going. Loved Granny Ketchum in The Odyssey, her garden and jars of healing herbs.

I remember that episode. Grandma said she was going to make Grandpa a new poultice and he said, "Oh, no!" Like it was the worse thing ever!

I'm watching The Quilting right now. At the beginning of the episode, Esther came home from caring for Martha Corinne, who had bronchitis, and she said she used a mustard plaster.

I love the home remedies when the appear on the show and Grandma's bravery through experience while administering them.
I'll remember your cold sore/ice suggestion.
Here's another - with a mosquito (or bug) bite put ash on it. The ash will draw out the venom.

When Zeb needs the poultice he mentions asafoetida which is what they used as a poultice on congested chest colds. Works amazingly well too if you can tolerate it.

My maternal grandmother always made a potato poultice when you had a sore/cut finger, toe, or such. It draws the infection to the surface. I still make and use them. I'll never forget when Mr. Forever and I was dating and one of his fingers was bothering him. I made a potato poultice and put on it. When we took it off, all of the infection had come to the surface. Pricked it with a pin and drained it. Immediate relief and no more soreness. He thought I was a miracle worker. LOL!
Don't know if this really counts but grew up doing it because of my maternal grandmother and momma. I still do it and have Mr. Forever and the foreverettes do it too. If we have a sore throat or our tonsils are bothering us. I get a glass of as hot water that you can stand and put lots of salt in it and stir it up. Then gargle as long as you can take it, then spit it out. Repeat until the glass is empty. Throat and/or tonsils always feel better afterwards.

I've gargled with salt water many times. Our Mamas must've been a lot alike.
My mother always made a paste out of baking soda and water to put on bee stings.

That reminds me, I had forgotten that my paternal grandmother always put chewing tobacco on our bee/wasp stings. It worked too.
