I recently discovered a website with archives of old time radio programs and I'd love to know what the Waltons listened to as they gathered around the radio. I know sometimes it was the Grand Ole Opry and some other "funnies" but I also recall Grandma listening to some type of Gospel programming. Does anyone recall any specific shows they listened to on the radio. I would love to search them on this website and listen to some! Thanks!

They listened to Charlie McCarthy. That was probably used in the show because Edgar Bergan played Grandpa in The Homecoming.
I have a case of old radio cassette tapes. There are about 20 in the case. Comnedies like Our Miss Brooks, Life of Riley, Fibber McGee and Molly, Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy,Burns and Allen, Red Skelton, Bob Hope,Abbott and Costello westerns such as The Lone Ranger and Gunsmoke, mysteries such as The Shadow, The Fat Man,and more. I got these years ago before DVD's came out. When our TV went up a few weeks ago I pulled them out and listened to them. I sat around the radio like the Waltons did.

Thanks everyone for the info! Very neat! I will look up some of those mentioned You may also have an actual radio station you can get in your area which broadcasts old shows.... Although I live about 35 miles north of Manhattan NYC, I can get CHML which is an AM station in Hamilton, Canada (near Toronto) -- and they air old programs every night.... the good thing about this is it's not just the popular sitcoms like Fibber McGee and the others mentioned above, but frequently non-serial dramas.... I'll be listening to one, recognize some voices, and -- lo and behold -- it's Clark Gable or Bogart and Bacall !!! ... I found this by Googling old radio shows and searching around.... has kept me very happy for a couple of years now
Oh -- almost forgot -- I believe you can also listen to CHML online....

You can also find a lot of them on YouTube. Many a night I have fell asleep listening to Fibber McGee and Molly playing in my smart phone by my bed.

I remember many years ago, maybe 25-35, giving my parents a few audio tapes of old radio programs, mostly from the 1930's.... and while, we all enjoyed them, my folks were rather disappointed that they were "heavy" on the comedies, while most of their favorites had been dramas.... And, now, having listened for a few years to AM900 CHML, I must say I agree !! ... the comedies are fun but you can find them all over the place, while it's quite difficult to find the popular dramas.... the westerns perhaps a little easier, but I love the various "playhouses" ... CBS had some good ones ! and CHML plays them frequently.... I wish I could find another radio station like that in my area.
