The Waltons made it's debut on TV on September 14, 1972, almost 42 years ago. For those of you that are old enough. Did you remember watching the first episode? Were there any commercials/ads on TV plugging the show before it began? Ads about the Waltons in magazines or in TV guide? Maybe a commercial about the Homecoming (which was done a year earlier) plugging the show?
I was in grade 4 or 5 and I didn't really pay attention that that sort of stuff at that age.
Any recollections?

I do remember things that cropped up AFTER the show became popular though.

I would have been 6, just starting the first grade.* I do remember the first episode, "The Foundling". I don't recall anything about the promotion of the show. *OK, so now you know how old I am.

I am certainly wayyyyy old enough. However in 1972 I did not own a TV. I was living what you might call an alternative lifestyle. Even if I had heard about the show, I wouldn't have wanted to, or have been able to, watch it. Honestly, the first time I ever watched The Waltons was in 2011 when I discovered it on Hallmark (or it might have been INSP). Once I started though, I was hooked. Look what I had been missing! Thank goodness both the show and I survived for the "resurrection" of The Waltons.

I had watched The Homecoming when it first aired and loved it. As I am the same age as the middle children, I really related to the show.
Then when it was a weekly tv series, my family and I watched the show every week.
I don't remember any commercials or advertising. I am sure they had them. I just don't remember them.

I do remember watching The Homecoming. My mother was excited for it to come on because she was a fan of Patricia Neal. I was glad they showed it regularly around Christmas. Reason being that we did not get a color TV until 1973. So it was not until the next Christmas I saw it in color. My brother and I used to go down to Grandma's house and watch The Waltons until my parents decided to buy a color TV. Funny how Grandma got one about two years before they did. I often wonder if she did that just so we would spend more time at her place. We sure watched allot of TV together. She never missed The Waltons or Lassie. LOL

LOL My older brother was in the service and he would always call home when the Waltons were on. I never wanted to talk to him. I just wanted to watch the show! We got a color tv sometime in the sixties. If I remember correctly.

I think I see the Partridge family in there somewhere!

I remember watching "The Homecoming" when it first aired. I was a little over six years old when The Waltons first aired. I don't remember watching the very first episode, but I do remember us watching the show. We watched it until it was canceled. I remember being bummed out because I really enjoyed the show.

Clyde, did you live in a commune? For a short time-turned out not to be my thing.

42 Years ago today. Time flies. Yeah... amazing, isn't it ?? .... and by now you know how much faster it goes the older you get !!
I remember watching the show occasionally when it first ran, mostly to see Richard.... but I was running around town so much back then that I didn't catch it often.... Can't remember when I first had an opportunity to see all the re-runs -- some time in the 90's, I think, and then was very happy when I saw it pop up again on Hallmark a few years ago.... I think the tv world now realizes they should never let it disappear again !!
