I grew up on a farm...cows, pigs, chickens, etc. so I know all about that. I also grew up cutting firewood, splitting it and gathering kindling. I know how to put in a garden, can vegetables & fruit, make jellies, jams, and pickles. Dry fruit to put up for pies and such plus dry/put up seed for next years crop. In one episode Ben had rabbits...I have also raised rabbits. I can tar a roof, paint, do carpentry work (my daddy was a carpenter). I know how to shoot a gun, use a knife, fish and cook. I can sew/mend by hand and on a sewing machine. I grew up doing quilting, crocheting, knitting, embroidery and cross stitch. I know how to make candles, use an old laundry wash board, churn butter, gather bamboo to make cane fishing poles, iron clothes, make beds and other such work. I have even helped out with a portable sawmill. Back in 2000, we bought a truckload of poplar tree logs, we also had a lot of cedar logs that my husband had acquired from helping people clean up after storm damage. We had a guy come with a portable saw mill and I loaded the logs by hand with a cant hook onto the sawmill. I removed the boards as he sawed them, then I stacked them up in the barn with stackers in between the stacks so air could circulate to help dry the boards plus I had to "sweep" the sawdust off each and every board. The man was really impressed with how I worked. I told him that was how I was raised. It took a week to cut all of the wood. We stored it for a year while we built our house with our own hands. We used the poplar wood for walls in our house, the cedar for our bedroom ceiling, trim work and our porch posts. We also used salvaged pine tongue and groove for our ceilings. Oh my goodness...you are my idol! Can I come for summer camp at your house? I believe this should be a group invite. "Camp forever and the foreverettes" or "Foreverland ranch" I bet the drinking fountain has Dr. Pepper coming out of it.

Hey I like Foreverland Ranch! I have been wanting to get one of those personalized "green" road signs to go at the end of our road. I was thinking "September Memories," since that is the month we got married in. But now I think I would like something with "Forever" in it.
My brother & I grew up going to work with our daddy (carpentry) every chance we had. My brother is a carpenter/General Contractor. When I met Mr. Forever he would work during his spare time with my daddy & brother. Later on Mr. Forever ended up working with them full-time for about three years. My brother started building his house in 1998. He told us that if we helped him build his, that he would help us build ours. So that's exactly what we did. We all saved a lot of money doing that, nearly sixty percent of the cost of building a house is labor. My daddy also helped my brother and I, plus my father-in-law had just retired when we started building our house and he would come over every day we worked to help us out.
Teckelhut, married2oldfool and flyaway are also impressive with all that they can do.

I doubt I would be able to jump right in, but I think I'd fit once I learned the ropes. I can plant and keep a garden, cook for large crowds, start a fire outdoors (without matches) and cook with a dutch oven. I love knitting, crocheting, and sewing. I have my own chickens and am not squeamish.
Like others have stated, I think my main issue would be privacy. Although I'd like to have two or three siblings, seven is far out of my patience league. I would probably be sulkier than Mary Ellen on a good day.

Let's make a pact to meet somewhere if the electricity ever goes out! The Walton Clan will not only survive but be happy and healthy!

Your home is beautiful! I love the view from the window, all the wood, and the family connections.
I have things from my parents, grandparents, and great grandparents in my house and it is such a comforting feeling to touch things that they touched. Thanks for sharing!
Also, I know how to make homemade root beer. Not Dr. Pepper but a little like it I guess!

Your home is so beautiful, Forever!!! And the fact that it's so personal and you built it together...just makes it so much more special and wonderful. I hope one of your kids will want to keep it some day. It would be great to have it stay in the family. You have the kind of house that holds out its arms and gives you a warm hug when you come home. As it should be.

Oh yes I could have lived with the Walton's...I still do. Although I grew up as a townie I was taught all the old ways by my parents who grew up during the 20 and 30's. My mom's best friend lived on a farm and I would spend summers there and she cooked on a wood stove...best bread I ever had. I grew up fishing and camping and yes learned to clean my own catch. I love to quilt and plan on making one using a treadle machine. My brother is 5 1/2 years older than me and we have a great relationship similar to that of Johnboy and Elizabeth. My kitchen is full of items from that era and we often joke that if the power were to go off we would be just fine. Between the wood cook stove, icebox, kerosene lamps, gramophone and a player piano we will be just fine! Here is a sampling...

Do you ever cook on it? we have a phone similar to what is in Ike's store. It is not connected by my grandchildren love to pretend they are talking on in and turn the crank to ring the bell.

It still has all the original parts and attachments. The only thing we replaced was the leather cord that turns the wheel.
