www.the-waltons.com/ikesty.htmlSome interesting information about Joe Conley here. Especially where he says that he always hoped that the Godsey family would get a spinoff! I wonder how that would have been?

Frazier succeeded Cheers successfully. AfterMash did not succeed Mash well. Ike may have lasted 5 or 6 episodes I think. Just my opinion. waltionsportwriter. Oh the Jeffersons did well after All in the Family but like Frasier it seperated itself from the original show. I dont think Ike would have been that strong or interesting a character on his own. Good thoughts though

Interesting. I'd disagree with that, Ike and Corabeth were always interesting and it would have given Amy a chance to develop. I imagine they'd have to have the characters move away from the mountain and open a new store, to give them a truely new start and to have a place for new characters to be introduced, but I think it would work.

I agree with you, AR15, with your additional remarks..... I don't think it would work on the mountain, but in a different location, the characters would certainly hold their own. Could make for some very good stories.....

Yes maybe away from The Mountain. Corabeth's character would have been worth watching.

But what would The Waltons have been without them?

An interesting prospect; you would not find a better curriculum vitae than working on a show like The Waltons. :-)

It might work but I cant see Ike walking away from his store. Remember when Cora Beth tried to get him to retire and go to Virginia Beach after his heart attack. I cant see Ike anywhere but the mountain. Where do you think it would work probably in a 1950s or 1960s setting.. Best wishes waltonsportwriter

Best wishes waltonsportwriter The storyline wouldn't have had to follow exactly what happened during The Waltons series....... He could have had a small store like that anywhere..... another mountain valley, whatever..... another small community which he and CoraBeth would be a large part of..... even a bigger part when they weren't competing with the whole Walton clan...... I think it could have been an excellent show!

Best wishes waltonsportwriter I seem to remember unused plans that invovled Ike's store burning down. Perhaps that could happen in the spin-off? Then he goes somewhere else to start fresh with Corabeth? Then, in the series finale, he could return to Waltons' Mountain so he's back in time for the reunions ;D (I imagine this series happening in the gap between the first three specials and the last three)

Remember in 1978 Corabeth(Ronnie Claire Edwards)played the part of a candy story owner's wife in Bridgeport,CT in 1937 . He was murdered supposedly by a town wierdo who actually was a World War I hero who had suffered from shell-shork. The actual killer was a renegade police officer who was a chronic boozer and had a son who was the town bully. After the daughter of an attorney begged her father to defend the town wierdo, who was called Snow-Man, many of the facts came out until the prosecuter thinks that Snow-Man actually was a pedophile and Snow-Man creates an outburst in the courtroom as the attorney's daughter is badgered by the prosecutor. The officer's son then finds out that his father is the real murderer and returns to confront him. In a struggle the officer is killed and the son disappears---we later find out that he left the next day to live with his mother in California and on February 19.1945,he is one of the first marines on shore at Iwo Jima

It may have worked had they moved to Charlottesville, with Ike taking over a grocery store and Corabeth selling real estate and hanging out with the local uppity snobs (of which there were and still are plenty of in gentrified Charlottesville).
Actually, it'd be better if Ike ran a pool hall/tavern there instead of a grocery. That way, Corabeth would have something to get into endless snits about in front of her bourgeois amies.
Amy could have been a student at University of Virginia, with Corabeth attempting to turn her into a snob against Amy's wishes.

My favorite character on the show was Ike Godsey. Joe Conley was a very good actor. I read his book and only wished it had been much longer. I'm sure he has many stories to tell about the filming of the show. Will Geer was my other favorite. I really enjoyed all the players however and they all seemed to be absorbed in their roles. Joe must be in his mid-80s by now. I would really like to meet him.

I think they would have done okay if they would have had many interesting supporting characters like the Walton family did, but I think the atmosphere would have felt deflated had they left the mountain.
