I saw her braiding it yesterday after Papa John told her he was going to Waynesboro for work, and she got mad and went upstairs...Funny thing is, we never see her wearing her hair "down"...And it's awful long too...In fact, it looked like it didn't even match the rest of her hair...

Hmmm..... I feel like we frequently see her brushing her hair before hitting the hay, but not always braiding..... And, it has always looked to me like there was too much "loose" hair for her french twist hair style.... (of course, we know ALL that loose hair was probably not really her own.....)
Also, sometimes the "twist" has quite a bit of hair at the top, sometimes not. Well, we must let her get a haircut occasionally!
Why, oh why, must they do this to us !!!

In that episode where her old beau Oscar said he wanted to see a picture of her if she got her hair cut. I'll bet she did not want any pictures taken of her when she had it cut and permed by Corabeth a few years down the road.

I always pay particular attention to her hair when she's in bed combing it or when she's just laying there. Seems each time they use a different 'fall' or hair piece and I do remember that time when her 'piece' didn't match. Then sometimes it's too long and straight while the stuff right next to her skull is thick and wavy. I also envied the fact her hair looks so perfect when she gets up in the morning, even when she went to bed with it still piled up on top of her head. My hair looks like a rat's nest when I get up! Sometimes I can barely get a pic through it!

Back in the yester year's it wasn't proper for a woman with long hair to keep it down on her shoulder's because it get's in the way and hamper's activity , or so I heard , Just Like on Little house , Caroline wore her's up all day and took it down at night , same with Laura when she married Almanzo Wilder.
A Lady was to be prim and proper and the hair must be up off the shoulder's. I heard only Parlor Girl's wore their hair down , as it was to attrack men.

No kidding glenda? ? I had never heard that! Interesting.....That explains why whenever I see old movies on TCM, (espeically those from the turn of the century) women had their hair up in buns and such...

I liked the early episodes the best because in the later episodes their hair styles were very 1970 and not really right for the time period the show was supposed to be in. I just thought it was kind of strange that Mary Ellen had a Farrah Fawcett hairdo and it was supposed to be the 1940's, even Olivia had her hair "frosted".

Yes , This is what I had alway's heard from Women in the olden day's , they were required to wear their hair up because it restricted Their daily chores. Only Their Husband's saw their hair down at night time.
But The Saloon Parlor Lady's wore it down because it was a sign of the women being sultry and desirable. Something for a man to run his fingers thru.

If you were working in a saloon, then keeping your hair down was indeed "part of the job". Not much different than the Hooters concept, really. (no, I don't frequent such places...juvenile).
As far as Olivia's hair goes, perhaps it was horse hair. I don't think Ike's would have sold Rapunzel-like locks, and Corabeth arrived on the scene long after Livvy's tresses grew so magnificently. Would a Sears Roebuck catalog of era sell something like that?
Maybe a Sears ad advertised a "bag of tresses" for each Craftman home sold. Kinda like how long ago, you'd get a free towel in every box of Breeze laundry detergent! Dolly Parton used to hawk Breeze, believe it or not, kiddies. Egad! Can't believe I'm old enough to remember that.

That's also why the Parlor lady's Wore outfit's with no Bustle's , again a sign of a sultry lady. If you read up on Hell's half Acre in Fort Worth Texas you understand why women wore the attire they did , or the lack there of.
Most of the time wives spent time in the kitchen cooking and lose hair does get into the food they are prepairing. So It must be up. Only at night did they take their hair down , and if it was long enough it was braided. I guess that was just the custom back then.
I think Long Hair on a woman is beautifull. Specially if it is Hip length.

Well I had heard a story from day's gone by , and supposidly mortician's cut hair off of the deceased and it was some how woven into a cap to be worn as a wig for the people that could afford luxery's that. I couldn't do that. Yikes* People do sell their beautifull hair to places that make wig's for cancer victim's.
Horse hair is way too course for wig's. I've got 2 horse's and their hair is alot different then human hair. It's really thick and it look's alomost prickley.
