It appeared that her hair was quite short, to me....... just sort of rolled up slightly at the nape of her neck..... much like one of my grandmothers'.....

I've seen Grandma's hair down in bed, she braids it. My hair is now finally long enough to pull up like Livy's. Sure is nice on a hot day!

I had longish, shoulder-length hair most of my life.... then, in anticipation of shoulder surgery, I went to a "pixie".... shocked to learn that short hair can be even hotter in summer than long.....
It's grown back now, and even longer. Love being able to put it up in the hot weather!

Not much different than the Hooters concept, really. (no, I don't frequent such places...juvenile). -----------------------------------------------------

Where did Livvy get all that long hair? Well it grows.
When you asked it the first thing that came to mind. Remember the movie Sometimes a great notion (also called Never give an inch) I don't know why the 2 names. When Leeland Stamper played by Michael Sarrazin shows up and has long hair everyone keeps asking him where did you get all that long hair and his answer was always Well it grows ;D

When my hair was long (waist length), it was so thick that once I broke the handle of a hair brush trying to brush it. And when I put it up it felt very heavy.

Oh ya, goodnight, I never thought of that...your right, it never was down. Good observation! I mean your comment about grandma's hair never being down.

Not talking about heavy, waist-length hair -- that would drive me crazy -- just long enough to get it up off your shoulders..... Also, have read that longer hair is easier to keep clean! Can you believe that? It seems that short hair "lets in" much more debris !!! Also gets oilier faster 'cause you tend to run your fingers through it more often.... Well, I guess I did find that to be true -- my hair always felt dirtier to me, sooner, when it was very short...... felt like washing it twice a day.... Strange subject!

Tonyray, my initial answer when I first saw the question was, "The prop department!" LOL
I kept my hair longer (down between my shoulders) until I was a senior in high school. I was always plagued by headaches. Seems like after I cut it I got less headaches.
The longest I've had it as an adult was just below my shoulders. It's thin and fine so it doesn't look good once it starts getting longer. Right now it's bobbed just past my chin and I'm really happy with it.

Livy did wear her hair down during her last year or two on the Waltons. When she and John took a trip she had it down and was all dressed up. I prefer it up though. I guess I just don't like change when it came to the Waltons. I wanted everything to stay the same, safe...secure...

And speaking as a man does these days.. the opposite can mean the same thing. Oh boy..

You know what? I am now thinking that Olivia cut the hair off Elizabeth's doll and pretended that it was her own.
Mercantile - yeah, hair up can be hot. Hair down also can be hot. It all depends on who is standing beneath all that hair. The right girl can string her hair through soup cans for all I care. It all comes down to that magical combination of brains, looks, spirit and emotional depth. Although I do like women who have the guts and playfulness to run around barefoot outside. Especially in streams. Life is funny, ain't it?

And all the better for it. mercantile
