I liked Curt but one thing that always puzzled me was that in the first 4 series Mary ellen was going to be independent and not settle down. It always felt wrong that she married so early - I know she continued with her career but it didnt seem like Mary Ellen to be married so young!

Hadn't really thought of it that way...... you make a good point. Considering your thoughts, I think that's what makes Curt the perfect choice for Mary Ellen. But, how could she have ever considered David ??!!

Hi, I definately think that the fiesty personality of Curts was perfect for Mary Ellen - I just think that her whole spirit and attitudes were forgotten by the writers. That said I loved their scenes together and was sad when he was written out. You are sooo right regarding David though - Never would Mary Ellen have gone for someone so 'nice'

Carol, I think it would have gone on alot better than the way it did when they had the imposter.

What surprised me about Tom Bower was that he had previously appeared in another episode called "The Wing Walker" as Rex Barker, the pilot. I sure didn't know he was TWENTY years older than Judy Norton. I figured he was some older, but not that much older! I have to wonder if Judy Norton had any say in the casting process--sometimes established actors in a series do have some say in the matter but mostly casting agents see what kind of chemistry occurs between actors before they do final casting. I would think as close knit as this cast and crew and production team were, that they did allow Judy Norton to have some input into the actor who would play her husband on the show.
I wish I had had such input when I was cast to play the girlfriend of a mobster, but I didn't. I heard the film won an award, but I wasn't there---I kept asking if it was "Best Actress" for me playing his girlfriend---it took some real acting for me to be convincing about being in love with this guy. He wasn't even as good looking as John Schuck on McMillan and Wife. LOL

There was chemistry between Mary Ellen and Curt and they were a good match. I just always thought he was abrasive and a little condescending with her family. I realize the character was supposed to be strong but he was just so abrupt. I found the resulting Pearl Harbor storyline to fit in with his character and wasn't surprised at all!

I don't think I have said this before, but Curt was my least favorite character on the show. When he was in a scene, he took all the positive energy out of it. He was an unhappy person (at least to me) and a real downer.
When I read the title of the thread "The Annoyance that is Curt Willard " I laughed because that's what he was to me, an annoyance.
When I introduced the show to my wife, I found out she dislikes him even more than I did. How about that.

.... and, as I've said before, he was one of my favorites!! I dug his personality and intellect, thought he was perfect for the highly direct, opinionated Mary Ellen (who else could keep her somewhat in line?).... I felt he added much spice to an otherwise rather vanilla show.... Oh, I love vanilla but I need some chocolate syrup occasionally

I think that mary-ellen needed a husband by the 5th season in season 4 she was still (or in my mind) looked and acted quite young, by the middle of season 5 she was just terrible (mary-ellen as a character not judy norton as the actress) she was to old to be rude and be funny she kind of needed to have a more grown up part.
I think Mary-ellen was attracted to curt because he was the same as her and I think that is what they are trying to show with David.
David was young, kind, had money, and doctor, and goodlooking, I don't Mary-ellen really loved him.
Curt was older, rude had little money, was a country doctor, and not really very good looking, I think that was a way of showing Mary-ellen really loved him. Just think about it. What would we all be saying with Mary-ellen had Married David?
We would be saying things like did she really love him? they are not a good match and so on.
With curt we just take it that they loved each other.
Maybe the director looked into the future and realised this?
just an idea.

Yesterday I watched the first show where Curt showed up....My Gawd, he was just truly annoying.... But I found him to be pretty funny when told Mrs. Brimmer that the only problem she had was that she was FAT, and needed to lose weight...The way he said it was a hoot!.. I still don't know what Mary Ellen saw in him though...And the way he was written after what happened at Pearl Harbor was awful...Seems to me they coulda came up with a better storyline than what they did...including the dreadful recast of the character... Brilliant. Sorry, can't add to this.

And shake things up they did indeed, the producers that is, for bringing back a post Pearl Harbor Curt. The second of the two episodes was among the highest rated shows in the Nielson ratings for that week, and I think it was the highest rated Waltons episode of the season.
It is also ironic that Scott Hylands who inherited the role of Curt was a friend of Tom Bower!!!!!
I did not like it personally, but it did bring about the ratings that they wanted.

I never cared for the character of Curt. I especially did not like how he treated ME when she was pregnant in regards to what she could eat. One slice of bread that Olivia baked would not have killed her. He might have been a doctor but he would have been sporting a fat lip had he been my husband if he had of told me that I could not eat one slice of my mother's home made bread.

I think that was typical at the time. Pregnate women were told to gain very little weight. It think I read something about women being told to gain no more then 15 pounds or something like that. When I had my daughter thirty five years ago, I was told to gain no more then 25 pounds. I gained 32 and the doctor was shaking his head at me and saying no more!

Always liked his character....loved his take charge, no nonsense attitude and his ability to accomplish what he set out to do.
The story line got a little silly after his departure, but I always liked the qualities he brought to the mountain while he was there.
