Jeanne Cooper taking medical leave from Y&R by Dan J Kroll Posted Friday, October 21, 2011 11:53:53 PM Long-time Y&R star Jeanne Cooper will be absent from Genoa City for a period of time. The Emmy winner will be on medical leave, but she will return. Veteran actress Michael Learned will temporarily take over the role of Katherine Chancellor. The Young and the Restless has confirmed that Emmy winner Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor) will be taking some time off from the show for medical reasons. The Entertainment Weekly has reported that veteran actress Michael Learned will take over for Cooper on a temporary basis. "Michael Learned is an accomplished actress and we are grateful that she is able to fill in for Jeanne Cooper for this short time,” Maria Arena Bell, Y&R's executive producer and head writer, said in a statement. Despite being best known for her Emmy-winning role on The Waltons, Learned does have previous daytime experience. She appeared in a short-term story arc last year on General Hospital. Prior to that, she also appeared in roles on All My Children and One Life to Live. The nature of Cooper's medical leave has not been disclosed, though EW asserts that Cooper is "okay." The 82-year-old Cooper will, however, return in the not-too-distant future, according to Bell. "Jeanne is an integral part of our show and we look forward to her imminent return," Bell added. "We have great storyline coming up for Mrs. Chancellor." Cooper is the second soap star is as many months to take a medical leave. In September, General Hospital announced that Kirsten Storms (Maxie Jones) would be sidelined for up to two months Learned will tape her first Y&R scenes next week. She'll appear on-screen beginning November 10. There's no immediate word on when Y&R fans can expect Cooper to return to work. soapcentral.com/yr/news/2011/1022-cooper_learned.php

Michael will do great as Katherine Chancellor. I hope Jeanne feels better soon.

Great to hear. I haven't been reading or watching any news the last couple of days since I just got back from the Walton Reunion. I caught Michael on General Hospital last year and enjoyed her stay on the show. I will definitely set my DVD to record while I'm at work unless, of course, I'm at home and can see her for myself (on TV) of course.

Did anybody catch Michael Learned temping for Jeanne Cooper as Katherine Chancellor on Y&R today? I know that alot of people like Jeanne in the role, but it was kind of refreshing seeing a major role on a soap being played by a well-known actress such as Michael. If anyone didn't get to watch the show this morning, it will be repeated tonight on SoapNet.

I watched it and really enjoyed seeing Michael as Katherine. Seemed like a very flawless transition, interaction with the rest of the cast was wonderful. Good Job Michael !

Can't agree on today's performance -- will watch again tomorrow and see how it goes for me.....

So, I've watched Michael on Y&R a couple more times..... to me, she's okay, certainly adequate, but nothing special. Also, unfortunately, she looks rather harsh -- I miss that soft, sweet appearance she once had. The role did seem more involving today, compared to last week. I don't know.... it may be that I just don't like soaps in general.... (worked on Secret Storm in the late sixties and HATED it.) To me, the soap business is schlocky!
I researched Y&R a bit and -- get this -- Scott Hamner (Earl's son) has been a writer on the show for several years! And, there's a character named Jess Walton!

I think she is doing an excellent job! I think she is expressing a harsh countenance on purpose. After all, the character she is playing is not all fairy dust and moonbeams! A good actor protrays their character not just through words, but body language and facial expression. I think Michael has it down to a "T"

I fully understand the points you've made about the part. But, sorry -- just can't agree -- I think her performance is just barely adequate, which saddens me.....

clb458, I totally agree with you. The show was really lucky that she was available to substitute for Jeanne.

Michael is a great actress, sorry, but I don't care for her performance on Y&R.

OK after watching the Yand R for a few more days, I have to agree that Michael just isn't "clicking" in this role. She is so animated on the Waltons. She really becomes Olivia but she seems to be having trouble becoming Catherine. Has anyone seen her in other roles? How does she perform?

I've enjoyed her on a few things -- but, she really hasn't done that much.... Much as I loved her as Liv Walton, I frankly believe she got this "temp" role because of Scott Hamner's involvement in Y&R. I wish it was working better....

It is my opinion that to some who have seen an actress such as Jeanne Cooper play the same spunky character for 30 years, it is hard to see someone else playing that part. It is also my opinion that, if some have not seen the actress, who is subbing, in a spunky role before might find it difficult to accept her in that type of role. I have and in person when I saw Michael in the play Driving Miss Daisy. Michael played a very spunky lady not only with the dialogue but with running around the stage and jumping up and down on stairs, so to see her repeat that type of performance I think that Michael is doing a very nice job in the role. My favorite line that she said today was suck it up. By the way, it may be that Scott and Michael know each other due to the fact that Scott is Earl Hamner's son, but I am sure that the powers that be at Y&R were very sure that Michael was and is a very accomplished actress whom they knew would deliver while Jeanne was away on her medical leave.
