I wonder why The Waltons didn't have an episode about New Years Eve and New Years Day.For New Years Eve they could have them listening to the radio when the ball drops or listening to a New Years Eve show,or them going to a party at Godsey Hall to welcome the new year in.For New Year Day they would be eating jowls, collad greens and blackeye peas, and they would be listening to The Parade and listening to football games on the radio.

FYI, professional football didn't become viable until some time in the 1950's... college football was followed, of course, but that wouldn't be of much interest to the Waltons.... Don't know how much interest in the NYC ball dropping would hold for them, either, especially only on the radio... Since they weren't drinkers, I doubt if even a champagne toast would have happened.... really hard to imagine the extent of any celebrating they may have done.... I guess there would have been some sort of acknowledgement, but not much...
It's an interesting question -- and, I think, the first time it's come up here on the forum.

I'm far from an expert on Waltons episodes, but it is a very good question. We were never big on NYE here at my house. I was a strict in bed by 9 little boy, but I know my parents stayed up to watch the ball drop on tv. I'm still not a big NYE person. I like the fact the year is over and I have a new calendar to look at, but that's about the extent of the celebrating I do.

They could have listened to Guy Lombardo. He started his New Years Eve program on the radio in 1929. He moved it to TV in 1954.

They sang Auld Lang Syne in “The Carnival” episode, but it wasn’t for the new year. I tend to think it was because it wasn’t a big deal to them. They had to go ahead with their farm chores just like any other day. It was never a big deal in my family either, and to me it’s still just another day on the calendar. I only have to remember to write 2019 instead of 2018.

Yes, I suppose the NYE parties were a luxury that the Waltons did not overdo, so an episode about it was probably not in the cards. After all, there wasn´t even a Christmas episode until the fifth season, not counting "The Homecoming."

When John Boy moved to New York City,he probably was in Time Square to see the ball drop, and since he was a reporter for a paper, he probably reported on it and probably interviewed some of the people there. He probably wrote home to them about it.
