They had trained and were in excellent shape. The two men they had bet against had not trained and were very lazy types. As it was, Mary Ellen and Erin barely won. Naturally, I understand that if both men and women are in good shape that most times men will be stronger and faster just based on biology. But, those men were not shown to be training and working out. One asked to be taken off the loading dock due to laziness. Back to pure biology, Mary Ellen was right: in order to win they would have to OUT-LAST the men. Studies have shown that while men are stronger and more powerful, women have better endurance and stamina. The race shouldn't have been as close as it was. 12 miles? Nobody who hasn't been training could last that long!

I can understand the close finish for the girls as the writers had to make it an exciting finish because of the big wager. What I have always found interesting about the race is what happened to the other participants? Except for the winners, who were way out front from start to finish, which gave me the idea that these were good ole boys from way back in the hills and tough as buzzards, the other teams sort of vanished. According to the board briefly shown late in the episode, I think one team never even finished. I have always thought a few seconds showing the troubles of the rest of the racers would have added an extra something to the excitement of the race.

I too wish they had shown the other competitors finishing. I think I counted 6 teams at the start? Mary Ellen and Erin did great coming in second. I really liked that J.D. seemed truly happy for Erin too.
