I have watched several episodes, and I don't recall even one mention of Olivia's parents. That is odd. The children should have had another set of grandparents. If they already died, at least mention them.

I don't remember them ever being mentioned either. There were some relatives on Olivia's side of the family - Rose and her grandchildren, Uncle Cody Nelson, and Aunt Kate. I also find it strange that her parents weren't mentioned.

Since the stories were roughly based on Earl Hamner’s life experiences, it makes me wonder if Mrs. Earl Hamner’s parents weren’t around in real life. It was a rather strange omission though!

I think I've heard or read somewhere that Earl's maternal grandparents, the Gianninis, were the ones who lived with them, and the characters of the grandparents on The Waltons were actually a composite of both sets of grandparents. I'll have to see if I can find that info online somewhere. If I can't, then I may have heard it at a Waltons Reunion or perhaps I just dreamed it up.

John jokingly tells Elizabeth that Olivia was the wildest filly around and he was a pillar of the Baptist Church. His parents were unhappy that he was seeing her but they managed to elope. I always figured we could just reverse their roles from his joking story and assume Olivia's religious parents didn't approve of their relationship but other than John Boy once pretending to write an essay about an "aunt" when he was really writing about Rosemary Hunter, I can't recall many reference to Olivia's family other than Rose saving her from a disease when she was a baby, and her parents meeting over a piano lesson years ago.

There was the episode where Olivia spent a few days with her aunt.... when she realized menopause had begun....
And, wasn't Uncle Cody a relation of hers, or was he from the Walton side ?
Also -- thought Rose was from the Walton side.....

Just looked it up -- Nope, both Rose and Uncle Cody were related to Olivia....

Did some research via Atkins...
S2 E3 -- mention of Olivia's sister Frances, who lives in Edgemont.
S6 E12 -- visits Aunt Kate, who is younger sister of Olivia's mother.

When Livy was suffering menopause symptoms and went to see her aunt, they talked about her mother.

In real life, Earl Hamner's, mother's brother lived right next door. So Earl probably had many cousins a few steps away. That house is the one that was just bought by a couple of Walton fans. The house was beyond repair and was just torn down. But they did salvage things from the house. And found a newspaper article about Earl when he was twenty five!

I seem to remember that it was mentioned that both of Olivia's parents were deceased.

If you are imaging it so am I because I have heard it too. I think it might be in the book Good Night John Boy.

There may be other references to this online, but I found this one: www.the-waltons.com/hamner.html
