I think they did an excellent job with casting peripheral characters on the show. So many of them feel so right for their parts, Wade, Boon, Vera, Sissy Spacek, Linda Purl is so much fun in both roles in the Spoilers and the Heartbreaker, I could go on and on. It seems they put a lot of effort into getting just the right people. How do you like the casting and who do you particularly like?
I think it's so odd that they went to the trouble to cast so well and then did crazy things with replacing so many of the main characters w/ different actors, or bringing them back as someone else altogether! Like Ep's wife who also was John's h.s. classmate! Even in a nearby episode one nasty sophomore at Boatwright turns out to be the head of the Honor Council just a few episodes away!

Before he was Curt the actor protrayed a pilot on the episode with the wingwalker. There were a few different Verns on the show as well as many other actors playing different characters. That is just the way it was and sometimes still is in the land of television. Still the best show ever, IMO of course!!

Nothing quite compares for me. I loved and still love the I Love Lucy shows but this is on a whole different level.

Hi, Carol! Vern was the junk man that Mary Ellen was always selling things too, including the typewriter that John Boy had borrowed from the Baldwins.

I think it's fun to recognize actors show up in different parts on different episodes.
Peggy Rea shows up as the landlady of Erin & Mary's Ellen's apartment in Season 7's The Empty Nest, before she becomes Rose in later episodes.
There's an older actor who shows up first as a librarian at Boatwright, then visits the Waltons as part of a Boatwright delegation when an old Walton kin decides to give away his farm to Boatwright, then this same actor shows up in Season 9's The Threshold talking to John Boy about the possibility of Boatwright creating a tv department. I call him "university official man." Maybe they wanted this guy to portray the same character, but in the first time he shows up, he seems dedicated to dusty stacks as a library science man and tries to get John Boy to change his major to library science, so that character doesn't seem like one that would move out of the field easily.

This is an interesting thread. Along the same lines, I hate how, mostly later in the series, they would bring in a good character and establish them and then just let them drift out of the series without much explanation like Hank Buchanan, Amy Godsey, Maude Gormley, Grandma, Yancy, Jeffrey, Serena...not to mention all the guest stars who would have made great re-curring roles like Jonathan Frakes as Ashley Longworth Jr. Maybe they didn't have the budget to pay these actors toward the last few seasons.

Amy Godsey appeared in some of the reunion specials. The woman who played the part of Maude died. Jeffrey and Serena moved back to Baltimore after their father married someone who cured him of his drinking.

The first actor to play Vern was George Tobias, probably best known as Abner Kravitz on "Bewitched". "The Waltons" had many fine, versatile actors who played any role they were cast in so well. Another reason I love "The Waltons" is the excellent acting talent on the show.

I remember Jennifer Jason Leigh portrayed the girlfriend Jim Bob was going to marry after he came home from the War. He told her all those tall tales about his war exploits, if I remember correctly.

I remember that Jennifer Jason Leigh's character lied to Jim Bob about being pregnant with his child. But Jim Bob told some whoppers also.

Carol Jones did played two different parts. The first one in "The Pin-up" from Season 7 she played Joann whose son accidentally drank poison while she left the kitchen to answer the telephone. And the second part in Season 9 "The Victims" which she played Laurie Ellis whom her husband abused her.
Also Kip Niven, who appears as Lieutenant Clarke Oler from Season 7 "The Pin -Up ", later regularly appears as Reverend Tom Marshall starting with The Beginning, Season 9.
