In seasons 8 and 9 and one movie sequel, why was John-Boy played by a different actor?
Why was he played by Robert Wightman rather than Richard Thomas?

Richard Thomas' contract was up, I believe, after 5 years and he chose to leave the show. The people running the show brought the character John Boy back and hired another actor.

How come Grandpa, Grandma, John, Olivia, Jason, Ben, Jim-Bob, Mary-Ellen, Erin and Elizabeth were not played by different people?
John-Boy was the only Walton to be played by a different actor.

Actually, Grandpa, John, and Olivia were played by different actors in The Homecoming. I think you'd have to get answers from the writers, producers, and directors about how actors were chosen for the characters and why they brought in a different actor for John Boy after Richard Thomas left, but they chose not to do that after Olivia and John left. The others were there through all 9 seasons, so there was no reason to get different actors for them. Attachment Deleted

No doubt the other actors weren't replaced with others cuz they didn't leave? I'm glad they stayed til the very end!!!

I think it's because Richard Thomas was in big demand for TV and movies, and they probably couldn't pay a big enough salary to keep him on board.
The other performers didn't have that kind of leverage.
