For anybody who (like me) is watching through The Waltons for the first time and wondering if Season 6 will be good without John-Boy, you shoul definantly watch The Grandchild an exceptionally good episode which proves that it will always be a good show through it's duration!

It's great all the way through the last episode of the last season!

I felt a piece of me vanish with each character that left the show. It was sad...

I think, at least for a while, the show somewhat improved as each character left. It gave all the supporting actors an opportunity to showcase their talents as primary actors. Some rose to the challenge such as grandpa, john, and jim bob. Others didn't, namely Elizabeth. I found that the older she got the worse her acting got. Of course, it really started to go down hill as the new actors started coming in as fillers, though Rose actually was a great addition.

I don't think it had to do with Kami's acting so much as her entering the awkward pre and early teen years. All the young actors seemed to have a period of time throughout the series were they came off as stiff or uncomfortable in their own skin. My kids were the same way in real life

That's true, lyn. I can definitely relate to that.
