I think so. I'm about halfway through these DVDs. I remember some of the episodes from my childhood, but most of them are new.
Seems to me that this is when the show REALLY hit its stride. The episodes started having some continuity. The stories focused on other family members besides John Boy. The writing involved some genuine conflict, much of it with John Boy's paper but also between the children. Supporting characters like Ike & Corabeth, Ep, Verdie and Yancey started having more prominent roles. Overall, it seems that the show just took on a more realistic tone. Not that other seasons weren't strong, but this one really seems to have improved on what they had already established.

I agree that season five was good, but I'd have to say that seasons 5-7 was the peak. After that the episode quality started to slope a bit. One of my favorite seasons is 4. It was slow (Southern-country-style), but also the stories were more interesting.

The 4th season was good- The Burnout, especially- but it still relied a little too much on the formula of "stranger comes to Walton's Mountain and has profound impact on the family, never to be seen again. Season 6 is good too, but suffers with the absence of Grandma.
For that matter, they're all good (at least 1 through 7 or 8). I just think that everything really came together for #5.

I liked the season just before Grandma dropped out due to stroke. Grandpa was still there. When he was gone the next season, the show lost it's edge....

I think it's the best of what I've seen so far (season 1-5 and part of season 6) and season 6 has lost a lot without John-Boy.

For me the best seasons are Seasons 4 and 5. I think all the characters are there together and have well and truly settled into their roles. You might be interested in a poll that's currently running on my Waltons Blog at thewaltons.wordpress.com/. There have been 92 votes so far and far and away the most liked season is Season 1! I'd love to include your votes too. Karen

I've actually come to appreciate the seasons after Johnboy's departure much more than I did, now that so much time has passed since the show went off the air. I've been watching it on vision tv this past year and am really enjoying the episodes that I previously paid little attention to.

I will always believe that series 1 and 2 were by far the best. the original family was together and I think that epitimized the spirit of the 1930's USA. At least for me. Then again we are all different and all have our own ideas an opinions on what is best and this i think is what makes the world go around.

I am thinking that seasons 1 and 2 are more realistic as to the lifestyle Mr. Hamner lived. The rest of the seasons seem to be written more like a hit telivison show that has paid advertisiers to please.

Carol From Cali
I think we feel much the same. The Waltons/Hamner lifestyle was very much as portrayed in series 1 and 2. BUT I havent read his original books maybe they dont have the 'Hollywood' effect. Still they are great folk (the Waltons) arent they
