Over the years there was a lot of music played on the Waltons. Naturally, there was a lot of it at the talented hands of the musician in the family. The music varies as well --- from classical to country to good old fashioned hillbilly --- not to mention hymns. In addition to Jason and Grandma's music there were various groups and some cameo appearances by some noted musicians.
For me, when I think on this subject, my mind always ends up thinking about Red Turner (Merle) singing Nobody's Darlin'. Does anyone else have a favorite?

I don't know the name of it but I love the tune that Jason and his friend Lipinski sang together one night in the barracks. Actually that's one of my favorite episodes.

Lipinski went home with Jason for the weekend -- -- Lipinski's Grand pa had just been murdered in the gas rooms in a concentration camp in Germany. Jason and Lipinski sang the song together in the Walton's living room to honor Lipinski's Grand Pa. I believe Jason was his officer and Lipinski was his corporal. They sang the song in the Walton's living room. When shadows fall --- and trees whisper something something something --- I forget -- but very heart warming. Season 8 The Unthinkable. Excellent choice. They did a wonderful job with this duo. Thanks Nickie

I really do love "Ironing Board Blues". There is another song Jason sang with a girl at the Dew Drop Inn. I will try to find it, so I can tell you the title!

Thanks Nickie Also one of my favorite songs; the song is titled "Home" Lyrics: When shadows fall and trees whisper day is ending, My thoughts are ever wending Home. When crickets call, my heart is forever yearning, Once more to be returning Home. When the hills conceal the setting sun, Stars begin a peeping one by one. Night covers all and, though fortune may forsake me, Sweet dreams will ever take me Home. *Believe it or not, a big band version of this song was in the movie, "The Shining". I watched it the other night and couldn't believe my ears! I found the version on YouTube. I also loved hearing Merle Haggard sing "Nobody's Darlin' But Mine" on the episode "The Comeback" season 5 ep. 3 Not only do I love the songs that were sung, but also the the small snippets of music played at the beginning of scenes; particularly the use of the trumpet. The best website to visit to listen to all the great music is: www.allaboutthewaltons.com/music1.php*The bottom of the page from season 5, the themes are my absolute favorites, especially Theme With Trumpet Feature. It's like you can see the Blue Ridge Mountains where you hear this music!! I was so impressed with this website, I e-mailed the guy who put it all together and he replied to me. How awesome is that?!

The music is what brought me to The Waltons in the first place. It's funny how the songs and snippets became 'ear worms', playing in my head over and over.
while in college back in the day I would check out books of folk music. In England and the US there were people who went about collecting folk songs. Some such as Ralph Vaughn-Williams made beautiful choral arrangements from them (his most famous being Greensleeves). In the US the Lomax family was involved starting in the 1930s. The area of the Smokies/Blue Ridge was a popular place to go, as the music people compared how a particular song was sung there as opposed to 'across the pond' in the UK.
went nuts the first time seeing The Minstrel since the guy was going around collecting old songs. I loved Maude singing East Virginia Blues.
In The Conflict, a favorite was Vera Walton singing the classic Barbara Allen.
In The Remembrance, Zadok Waltons old violin solo brought a tear to my eye.
Finally, thanks to the powers that be that encouraged Jon with his music. I'm curious how he came to love 'old timey' music, what encouraged him to take up the harmonica (or 'harp').

Maude Gormley in The Minstrel
East Virginia Blues
I was born in East Virginia North Carolina I did go There I courted a fair young maiden But her age I did not know
Oh her hair was dark and curly And her cheeks were rosy red On her breast she wore a lilly Where I longed to lay my head
Molly dear, go ask your mother If you my bride might ever be If she says no, come back and tell me And I'll run away with thee
No I'll not go ask my mother Where she lies on her bed of rest In her hand she holds a dagger To kill the man that I love best
The ocean's deep and I can't wade it And I have no wings to fly I'll just get some blue-eyed boatman For to row me o'er the tide
I'll go back to East Virginia North Carolina ain't my home I'll go back to East Virginia Leave old North Carolina alone
I don't want your green back dollar I don't want your watch and chain All I want is you my darling Say you'll take me back again
For you know I'd like to see you At my door you're welcome in At my gate I'll always greet you For you're the girl I tried to win

Yeah, you gotta admit, The Waltons is a gold mine of vintage folk music. I pick out songs and buy them on iTunes.
I really like "Let Me Call You Sweetheart." That old time tune is one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard.
"The Ironing Board Blues" is really a catchy tune. Did Jon really write that?
"Old Spinning Wheel" (in the parlor...)
I just love the old time music of The Waltons.
"When it's springtime in the Rockies, I'll be coming home to you..."

I also like "The Old Spinning Wheel" from The Conflict." That is my favorite episode. I love that one and the way Michael Learned sang it was beautiful.
