I'm going through The Waltons for the first time and I'm currently reaching the end of Series 5. John-Boy has been my favourite character through what I have seen and am slightly annoyed that he is not in it much longer. I know he's partially in Series 6 isn't he? But what I wanted to know is does the other actor who replaces Richard Thomas as John Boy as good? Is he still as enjoyable to watch?

enjoyablity is in the eyes of the beholder. My eyes do not care for the new John Boy.

I always liked John Boy #1 the best. In one respect, it was nice to have a character there, but the new actor just wasn't 'John-Boyish' enough for me. ;D

I agree. Richard Thomas will always be John Boy as far as I am concerned. Robert Wightman was OK but nobody else could play the part as well as Richard did.

Now that you have the 9th season on DVD You should see John-BoyII in The Last Ten Days,,his performance was wonderful there--- Then immediately put in The Revel---you will be able to see how JohnBoyI was still good at the end---

I think most people will agree that Richard Thomas is John Boy, and he couldn't really be replaced. So, I think Robert Wightman did an adequate job under the circumstances.
I think you should go ahead and watch the remaining seasons. There are some very good episodes that you probably won't want to miss. Also, it seems that after Richard Thomas left, the characters of the other children were developed more.

i think they did a good job in casting Robert Wightman as John-boy to keep the physical appearance as close as possible, but he had large shoes to fill.
for a while it seemes as though he was playing Richard Thomas playing John-boy (if that makes any sense). What i missed seeing was the all-out, scream-at-the-top-of-his=lungs, reckless spirit that Richard Thomas brought to the character at times. i wish we knew what Robert Wightman thought of taking the part on, and how he saw the character. that would be an interesting story.

I think Robert did a fine job as a fill-in. In fact, if we were not so used to Richard Thomas as John-Boy, I think many of us would consider Robert more like the other Waltons, at least more like Jim Bob and John Walton.

Also, (I've just finished series 5 on thursday) can I just ask can somebody tell me when John-Boy comes back in series 6? And is he back for the rest of series 6 when he's back? Or back for just one episode?

I was just going to mention this same thing in another thread. I really don't care for John Boy's replacement. He's okay looking, but his voice and demeanor are so 'not' John Boy.... I just hate it when good things come to an end. In my entire life, I don't think anything has affected me quite like the ending of the Waltons. (deaths in my family not included)

Or back for just one episode? Richard Thomas comes back as John-Boy for The Return a two hour episode and The Revlation and then you don't see Richard Thomas again until A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion.
