I did quite a bit of driving Saturday, 2 hours 45 minutes each way between home and my alma mater, Penn State, to see the #1 ranked and two-time defending National Champion women's volleyball team defeat the University of Minnesota 3-2. I'm not a huge music guy and have a hard time finding songs I want to listen to while I'm driving. On a small number of occasions, I've actually driven as long as 5 hours without putting the radio on at all.
So, on longer drives such as this or longer, I tend to take a portable dvd player and "listen" to a tv show while I'm driving instead. Saturday I was able to listen to The Fire, The Love Story, and The Minstrel on the way to Penn State and I listened to most of WrestleMania III on the way home. It made the time go a lot faster than music does.
Anybody else listen to tv or movies on a long drive instead of the radio? Or do you find yourself putting on the Waltons when you know you're only going to be listening and not watching? I know people have mentioned before liking the Waltons on tv when they are doing chores.

I like to watch and listen to The Waltons when I am knitting/. I don't wear my eyeglasses when I knit so I can't really see the television too clearly so I listen to it.

Love listening to all my 'oldies' while I am driving long distance. I am not a fan of AM, bubble gum type music. I will listen to classical, alternative and oldies (according to WXRT in Chi town) Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Elvis Costello, etc) while I am driving.

Unfortunately, no reunion for me again this year.

On road trips we change up the radio stations several times so everyone gets to hear some of their music. That means we listen to classic country (Mr. Forever) and for the rest of us, mostly 70's, 80's and a little of today's sounds. There will sometimes be 50's, 60's and 90's thrown in there as well...even some classical music (can you believe some of my foreverettes like classical). We have a DVD player in our 'family' vehicle but we have never used it. I like raising my foreverettes the way Mr. Forever and I was raised...you entertain yourself with your daydreams and thoughts, singing along with the radio and good conversation. In addition to that we pass time by looking out the windows for out of state tags, different kinds of animals, and such.
Back when I worked at a 'paying' job, I enjoyed listening to books on cassette in my car going to and from work.
I enjoy doing other things at home while the Waltons play in the background. I know what each character looks like and know what's going on from having seen the episodes so many times, so I don't have to 'view' them. Now, if it is one of my favorite episodes, then I will usually want to sit down and watch it.

The Waltons go with us via RV or car. I would much rather listen to them than music! I also take along Northern Exposure and sometimes Andy Griffith.

I had a magical horse that use to run alongside the car for the whole trip. She would jump the rivers, buildings, run along between the car and other traffic as we made lane changes. She was always by my window. She was quite the horse. She was brown and her ears were always turned towards her back with her mane coiffed according to the wind. I don't think I ever named her, she just was. I miss her. Maybe she is with Puff the dragon and Winnie the Pooh.

When I was a child more roads were made of concrete and the car tires made a popping sound that sounded like a horse running. I used to love that sound!

I usually play The Homecoming CD that I have.

Sometimes I will have it on low in the background while I'm working if I'm doing something that doesn't require concentration (hasn't been the case lately) and I often have it on doing housework. Seeing Olivia and Grandma cleaning the house in inspires me to get moving.

I've never tried listening to a DVD in a car! When I first glanced at your subject line 'taking Waltons on a road trip" I immediately thought, "we'll need to take a big car to fit them all in but Erin can sit on my lap!"
