I noticed in the earlier seasons that Jason has a southern accent, but in later seasons it seems to have gone away. Anyone else notice this? Which was his natural accent, the southern one or the one he had later? I wonder if the actor during the first few years tried to have a southern accent and decided to neglect it later, or if he lost the accent over the years.

I think that after the first few episodes of the first season, the producers decided to change the southern hick thing they had going on. Jason not only had an accent, he also lumbered when he walked. John wore a hat that is ditched later.
Hope this helps

I think, at first, they had him speak with an accent, because he was the only one that really needed to. No offense to our British friends across the pond, but to me, Jason seemed much more different than the rest of the family, this because he was the only one born in Great Britain. He just didn't have the ruddy American grit present in Jim Bob's, Ben's, and John Boy's personalities. He did an amazing job making you think he really grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains, though.

Only Michael Learned retained any semblance of a Virginia accent -- the broad "o" sound -- for any length of time. Even when the cast tried, during the first season, they didn't sound Southern or Virginian.

I always thought it was odd that Livy was the only one with any kind of accent....

"I always thought it was odd that Livy was the only one with any kind of accent.... " Except for Earl himself, who is the only one out of all of them that was from Virgina.

"Earl was just a narrator.... " LOL Actually, Earl was who the show was about. If the actors should sound like anyone, they should sound like Earl.

I think everyone knows what I meant. I've been watching the show since it first came out. I know who Earl is.
