I recently finished reading both Spencer's Mountain and The Homecoming, and I think they are two of the best books I've ever read (Spencer's Mountain is the best book I've ever read) but I was wondering do they have any chronological order to them? As before reading The Homecoming I assumed it would be a continuation to the first and that the title referred to Clay-Boy's return from collage, but in it he is still fifteen and he is described as never having made love to a woman (which he does in Spencer's Mountain) and it seems to imply both grandparents are dead (Zebulon and Elizabeth), now at first I assumed The Homecoming was set before Spencer's Mountain but am not sure after the implied deaths of the grandparents which could not happen yet... So does anybody know. is The Homecoming set before or after Spencer's Mountain or are they both just intended to be stand alone works featuring the same characters? Either way they are excellent novels ;D

Spencer's Mountain was first before "The Homecoming" then "The Waltons"

The setting of The Homecoming was Christmas Eve 1933. According to the book Earl Hamner, From Waltons Mountain to Tomorrow by James E. Person Jr., The Homecoming is a prequel to Spencer's Mountain.

Ah that seems to make sence... As it's only implied that Elizabeth and Zebulon are dead never stated... thanks!

But, Spencers Mountain hit the big screen before the Homecoming (to add to the confusion)

Yeah I know, Spencer's Mountain came out as a book before The Homecoming as well, that's why I was confused

In Spencer's Mountain, he graduated from high school and went off to college. The Waltons is kind of constructed around those same Spencer's Mountain years but also adds John-Boy in college and beyond.
