My favorite opening sequence is the one for the first season. I really like how it is live footage of the characters and that John Sr. brings home the radio and everyone comes out to see it. I especially like when Elizabeth runs over and John-Boy picks her up, and then she turns the dial on the radio.

I wish they would have been more creative with the opening of the show, especially as the children grew up

I hadn't seen that first season opening until they began using it on the reruns maybe a decade ago. It really looked corny enough to be a satire, with each character briefly showing his/her piece of schtick, then all of them coming together.
I prefer the later titles, with the portrait of each character shown as if in a faded old daguerreotype. Those are tasteful and nostalgic.

I liked the first season opening, because it is nice to see how the characters were at the beginning of the series. The photographs used in the following seasons was good, too, although it would have been nice to update them as the years went on. The same could be said of other shows, such as "Little House on the Prairie," but I am sure that the expense involved was prohibitive.
