Yes there was another boy named Paul who was never mentioned. He was combined to create Ben. Hi Ali, Well I guess I'm too slow to get on the computer since I was too busy doing my errand run. Donald already help you but he forget to mentioned that Bill and Paul are twins and they are combined to create Ben played by Eric Scott on the Waltons series.. You can see below by real family of Earl Hamner and the character played by: Earl Hamner-Richard Thomas (John Boy) Clifton Hamner-Jon Walmsley (Jason) Marion Hamner-Judy Norton (Mary-Ellen) Audrey Hamner-Mary McDonough (Erin) Bill and Paul Hamner-Eric Scott(Ben) James Hamner-David Harper (Jim-Bob) Nancy Hamner-Kami Cotler (Elizabeth)

thank you Tracey...
I see their names are all different too
so about the actual series, were some of the episodes not really true e.g. made up stories by other writers?

Per Earl Hamner- Not every one. Each story had its inspiration either in an actual event or in the character of one of the people involved. The story of The Hunt, for example, grew out of a real hunt that Earl went on with his father soon after he came home after WW II. Sometimes a story would be built around a historical event such as the burning of the Hindenburg or the recent special based on the assassination of President Kennedy.

I think Earl mentions in "A Decade of the Waltons" that originally there were supposed to be 8 children in the series but the network asked them to cut it down to seven.

Ben was a composite of two of Earl Hamner's brothers,Bill and Paul. CBS wanted seven children so Earl came up with Ben as a composite character of Bill and Paul .
