Kathy Lee - Are you off on another one of your trips? Maybe you are just too busy with your recipes in the kitchen.

I've missed Kathy Lee too. And Marilyn. And Sussie's been rather quiet.

I don't know what I was thinking...I forgot that she hasn't retired yet. I'm sure that's what it is, the old grindstone of going back to work.
I still have six children at home. My oldest one still here graduated high school in May, started summer classes at a local community college six days later. She finished her summer courses not quite two weeks ago and today was her first day of fall classes at the same community college. My other five children started back to school on Tuesday August 12th. They are in the 11th, 8th, 7th, 4th and 1st grades.

Kathy Lee - Are you off on another one of your trips? Maybe you are just too busy with your recipes in the kitchen. You were right, we were away.....twice. The first week of August we went to a cabin in the Adirondack Mountains. The weather was great and the grand kids had such a good time. We swim, canoe, have bonfires, and eat too much. My job....the hardest job.....is to keep those little people happy during the drive up and back! Then we were home for a week and a half. So, I went in a few days to set up my library. Then we went to visit friends in New York State and went to the state fair in Syracuse. The fair is huge and so much fun. We have been going for about thirty years. We took a chance on a cow and my grandchildren are convinced that it is theirs! On the ride home, my job was to keep the kids happy in the car again. All went well until the last hour of the ride home. The three year old had had enough and wanted out of the car seat! We stopped at Cracker Barrel, had dinner, let them run around a bit and everyone was happy again. At Cracker Barrel, I bought two mugs. One says, "Oh my stars!" and the other says, "I'm fixin' to." Could not resist and they were on sale! School starts next week so no more vacations for a while. I spent all day at school today so I am ready for next week when that alarm goes off at 6:00am! Way, way too early for me!

Believe it or not, teachers are not allowed to strike in New Jersey. We can do job actions like not put up bulletin boards or not work late. That will show them! What I am not sure.

I've been to the state fair at Syracuse many, many times -- but not for years.... glad it's still as good !!
Where in the Adirondacks ?? .... friends of mine built their "retirement" log home in North Creek about 5 years ago.... and I also love the whole Ausable to Saranac stretch.... and, I once drove my 1971 Pinto up Whiteface mountain, carrying an outboard and 2 bikes (in addition to luggage).... blew the shocks and springs -- but, it made it !!
One more thing -- my paternal grandmother probably said "My stars" more than anything else ... that was cursing in her generation

We go to the Old Forge and Inlet area. Our New York friends started us going there and we really enjoy it. We rent a cabin at a lovely place that is nice and quiet. It is on 7th Lake.

I've seen a great documentary on PBS about the canoe race they have every year -- from lake to lake -- lots of walking in that boat race !!

I will have to look for that documentary. I see people all the time carrying their canoes across the road. Portage, I think it is called. We are lazy and just stick to one lake.,

The state fair still has the potato booth. Used to be free but now is $1.00. Still a great buy and so good. Dairy building still has the butter sculpture, squeaky cheese, and milk for 25 cents. Our favorite. Indian village has the dancing which my grandson loves to watch. I love the corn soup they sell. At the free concert court we saw the Bacon Brothers (Kevin Bacon). They were excellent! Really good singers and musicians. The Slices and Dices building (center of progress) now has the sand sculpture. We call that building the slices and dices building because all you hear is..."It slices, it dices, it takes the hair off your dog, and cures dandruff!" I did buy a new potato peeler and slicer thing! The horticultural building has the bees and the maple exhibit. We had maple popcorn, maple ice cream, maple cotton candy, and maple snow cones! It it really is a nice fair.

Kathy Lee, Good to see you back. It sounds like you stay busy during the summer months. School started August 6th in the county where I live. I'm so glad I didn't have to go back and decorate a room and listen to all the boring staff development sessions and meet a new crop of over-protective parents. Unlike Jerijet, I think retirement is wonderful. Teachers have a no-strike clause in their contracts in West Virginia, too, which is strange because it is a highly unionized state and everyone else can go on strike. Just not public employees. Teachers did go on an unofficial strike in 1990. I was not one who walked out. It was my first year working in a new county, and I didn't want to take a chance on losing my job. The dispute was over salary and health insurance. Many teachers did walk out, and the United Mine Workers came and supported them. No one loves a good strike like a UMW coal miner. . Anyway, we got our pay raise and the better health insurance we were looking for, and as far as I know, no one lost their job.

I certainly believe that retirees who still have their spouse, as well as family close-by can continue to enjoy retirement for years, hopefully in good health.... Unfortunately, such is not the case with me, on all counts.... and, after over six years' retirement, it can be quite difficult, no matter what steps you take to try and make it better.... faith helps.

Jeri, I'm so sorry to hear that. I am looking forward to the day I don't have to work every day. But I know my "retirement" will be filled with a lot of activity living on a horse farm and wanting to do a lot more gardening (organic produce), and canning and probably some hunting (pheasant and wild turkey mostly--considering trying it).
I have so many interests and things I love to do that I don't think even in retirement I'll have enough time to do it all. I'm glad you have your faith to keep going. I know you have a lot of interests, too. That must be some comfort.
