Just came back from a trip to the Shenandoah National Park. We stayed at Skyland Resort which is about mile 41. We love it there. The view from the mountains is so lovely and all the shades of green, blue, and grey in the different mountain ranges are amazing. The days were warm and the nights were COLD! Great way to get away from the summer heat and humidity. Saw bear and deer. When people just stop their cars look around because they see something. Went with my husband, daughter, and the grandchildren. The little ones love it there. One night, we walked up a hill to a ranger program. Afterwards, as we were walking back to our room we could see a large open area and flashlight beams. All the children were running around and having so much fun. They grand kids joined in and it was so sweet to see everyone just enjoying the night. We also did a bit of hiking (as much as you can do with a 3 and 6 year old) which was fun. Had great meals in the different dining rooms. I always think of The Conflict when I am there. There is an exhibit at Big Meadows about the displaced families. And you can hike to old cabins, churches, and graveyards. A nice vacation spot and worth the trip!

I've driven through there but never stayed. Itsounds like something I'd like to do though. Thanks for the idea. It can be a nice add on to a trip to a Schuyler trip as the Skyline Drive ends at Waynesboro. Charlottlesville is near by and also has many great attractions as does Luray. In fact, when you stay at Skyland you look down on the town of Luray. Very pretty at night. This weekend is a blackberry festival. I wish we could be there. We are going back in September for my birthday. Also, if you go, join the Shenandoah national Park Association. It is $45.00 for a family for the year and gets you 30% off lodging and 20% off dining and anything from the gift shops. The membership helps us save a ton of money every time we go. If you go in the summer, wear a wide brim hat. It will keep the gnats away from your face. They can be pesky sometimes. In the woods it is fine but in open areas they love, love, love to fly around your head. Another trick is to put one hand up in the air as they will go to the highest point. I prefer a wide brim hat. Much easier.

Big Meadows is the place where Geno said he was from in The Boy From the CCC. Big Meadows is where they had the CCC Camps and there is an exhibit about it that is interesting. There is camping, cabins, rooms, and dining at Big Meadows also. I love the buckwheat pancakes. They are my favorite!!!
