Howdy Ya'll, I know this is a touchy question, so I'll be careful. What characters could've been taken away without ruining the show? I believe the show continued fine after John-Boy left. The quality could have been kept up had the other actor stayed away. The new "John Boy" reduced the show's believability. We all knew Grandpa would eventually die, and his death seemed natural, true to life. It was fitting, and the show had some great episodes, yes, even after Will Geer's death. The show chugged on with Grandma in the hospital, however I think it was bad judgment to explain her absence later on by having her 'visit relatives.' The show carried on adequately without Olivia, but when she was "re-diagnosed." Just too much!
I haven't seen s.9, but I heard it was just mutilated by character absence. Rose, Jeff, and Serena were good additions, and it just killed to have em' leave. Then, Ralph Waite, the bulwark of the family, left. This was the final death sentence. I believe this, not even having seen anything of s.9.

I think that it would have been better to skiip the whole Rose and crew sceen, plus, I think that they could have keep the feel of the show without the new John-Boy. The producers should have developed the characters of Waltons mountain more. Its hard to say as I am one of those who enjoyed the eariler shows when the family was strugling yet working on their dreams.
