I think Grandma had her own private joys - like when she excitedly asked JB if she could ride in the outside seat on his new car, she was like a little girl in that scene and I loved that .

When this topic was first brought up, it made me start to really pay attention to Grandma's expressions. She had lots of moments that brought a smile to her face. Granted... she wasn't giddy with happiness like the girls and she had already known what it was like to raise her own family, like Olivia was doing. She acted like someone who'd already seen and done it all and was just now able to sit back and watch (through her experienced eyes) the next generations going through what she once did. No one could have played this part as well as Ellen Corby did.

I just saw an episode...don't remember which one. And at the end during the "goodnights," Zeb says, "Good night. old woman." And Esther says, "Good night old man..." and she fairly purrs!!!!!! You have to listen for it. It was very sweet.

A couple of my favorite Grandma moments:
In the "Ghost story" where she is reading That childrens book to Elizabeth and the kid whose name I cant remember, and They get bored and leave and Grandma is interested in it so much that she continues to read it.
The other one is the episode where Olivia, Jim bob , and Elizabeth get lost in the woods.
She tells Mary ellen and Erin to mop the floor or something and They tell her something like , "Grandma , how can you say that ?"
She says something sarcastically like, " Yeah, I am just a mean old woman with no feelings." She wanted them to get their minds off the situation.

Thinking about Grandma reminded me that Ralph Waite's real mother was named Esther -- isn't that great ?!!

I think the book she was reading to the little kids in "The Ghost Story" was "Chicken Little".
I thought of this thread when I was watching the episode about Mary Ellen's quilting tonight. Grandma is going to write an ad for Blue Ridge Blueing to win a prize. JohnBoy thinks the one she wrote that said "Cleanliness is next to godliness" was clever and funny. And she got this puckered up look on her face and crumpled the paper up. Apparently no one, not even herself, was allowed to joke about God. Even unintentionally.

I think Grandma was happy in her own way. I remember many serious older women when I was young. They were very no-nonsense but they loved their families. Maybe all they went through, the Depression, sons lost in wars, lost babies, etc. made them and Grandma that way. Just watched "The Thanksgiving Story" and when Grandpa squeaks the turkey caller he tells Ben that it sounds just like Grandma!

Just watched The Awakening last night and Grandma was in rare form. Sitting by the lake Grandpa tells John-boy...
"Yes, sir, re. There was something real special about that Sissy. Smart as a whip. Pretty as a picture. She could hold her own with any man. In a way, I feel real sorry whenever I think about Sissy. Cause none of her dreams ever amounted to much." - Grandpa "What happened to her?" - John-Boy "I married her." - Grandpa
Explains a lot.

Now, when I am watching the show, she does seem cranky a lot. Note to self...don't get cranky when you get old. Ellen Corby was only in her sixties when she died! Wow, she did die fairly young. She always seemed so much older. Ellen Corby was born on June 3, 1911 and died April 14, 1991 so she was 79 yrs old when she died. Thanks! She lived longer then I thought. Do you know how old Grandpa was when he died?
