I have to wonder if CBS and others thought that season 8 was going to be the last season? The last episode of season 8, "The Valediction", seems like a great final episode. Does anyone know if this was intended to be the final episode? If is was, I wonder why they decided to make a season 9. Don't get me wrong...I am glad that they did make another season.

Good question, Forest. Yes, there was a feeling from the producers that this may be the last season, so the excellent "Valediction" episode, followed by "The Decade of The Waltons" a few months later would have been a very fitting finale. CBS surprised many by renewing the show for another season. Budget cuts hurt the show in it's ninth year with non-original episode music in the first 13 shows. I guess Alexander Courage cost a pretty penny to score each episode. Thankfully he returned! Also the characters of Jeffrey and Serena were axed to save money. Earl Hamner has said that this final season was for the Walton "kids". I think the final season did tie up the loose end of World War 2 still being in progress. I think we're all happy for the ninth season, despite it's shortcomings.

Well, a lot of the episodes could have been good endings. Each final episode of seasons 5-8 could have been the last.
John Boy leaving. Grandma Comes Home. Founders' Day (Jason's graduation from the conservatory) Jim Bob's Graduation
The show could have ended peaceably on any one, although I'm glad it didn't.

One of the reasons the shows that star young people are eventually cancelled is that the young people grow up---the Bradys and the Partridges eventually folded --the reason was ascribed to low ratings but the main reason was the characters became too old for the part.Ditto with Leave it to Beaver and Family Affair. The characters did not seem appropriate when they became older doing things that children and youngsters do----

I have to wonder if CBS and others thought that season 8 was going to be the last season? Yes. As I remember, the series was initially canceled after Season 8. I remember hearing the news and crying. Then I believe CBS got a ton of protests and rescinded the cancellation. Of course, after seeing "The Tempest" I wondered if that was a good idea. Lord, I despise that episode. YMMV!
