Howdy Ya'll,
From rumors here on the forum and from friends, I had come to fear that season eight and nine might perhaps not be worthy of the earlier seasons, maybe even boring! Seeing s.8 (or at least the first half) has made me realize that these ones are just as good, just in a different way. The first four seasons were more country rustic. Season five was the beginning of changes brought on by the easing of the depression (not to mention John-Boy's newspaper). Six and seven brought drastic changes, and war is on in s.8. I can understand what ppl say about the first seasons being so much better, but we got to remember...
Life never stays the same. The only thing on this fallen earth we can be sure of is change. I think that's what is represented by the supposed "lesser quality."
P.S. I'd still have loved Richard Thomas to return, but this new guy is not entirely horrible. He has some slight similarities.
P.S.S. I completely change my mind about Mary Ellen. How stupid was I even to think of anyone different than Judy. I especially love the episode when Mary Ellen and Erin beat those two slackers.

P.S.S.S. - I think Jeff, Serena, and Rose are great additions to the show. Just a little more of childish mischief.

Excellent observations, Joel. ;D I think you can see why all of us die-hard Walton fans like ALL the episodes. The early episodes are certainly different from the later ones, but there's nothing wrong with that. Life goes on. Some of the changes we don't like such as Grandpa dying, Grandma's stroke, etc. are some of the reasons why the later seasons aren't quite as well loved as the first 5 seasons. Robert Wightman as John-Boy was well thought out I believe. He did resemble Richard Thomas. In the series, John-Boy was a changed man from his experiences in World War 2, so I thought his change of appearance was a subtle way to show that war really does change a person!!

I like all nine seasons of the show along with the movies that followed. I agree that the show reflected the changes that not only affected the Walton family but the nation as well. War does change people. I think John Boy,Jason, and Ben,who all saw action in the thick of battle, along with John Boy's plane crash and his long hospitalization along with Ben being a POW,had all been changed by the war. Jim Bob remained stationed on the home front so he probably would not have been affected as profoundly though he as well discovered there was a world away from Walton's Mountain. Mary Ellen, Erin, and Elizabeth discovered they could hold their own in a "man's world" as women assumed more "non-traditional" roles. The show merely changed with the times and reflected those changes and did an excellent job.
