I found this video clip of Burt Reynolds hosting a celebration for Ronald Regan. Ellen Corby can be seen sitting at the table next to him. She gets a cigarette which is then lit by a woman in a blue dress sitting next to her (could this be her friend and caretaker of many years Stella Luchetta?)

It's strange seeing Ellen smoking regardless of when. I realize she was portraying a character in a TV show and her personal life was separate, but it's still weird for me. I guess it speaks to how convincingly she played Grandma.

That does not appear to be Stella to me.

I wonder if anyone would light up a cigarette today sitting at a table with others. Maybe because of various laws, but I don't think today's smokers would be that rude.

Would never happen now as people are more aware of the dangers of cigarettes. Back then everyone smoked. I hear stories from my co workers who worked in the 70s and I was floored to hear they all smoked at their desk. I've been watching Call the Midwife and see scenes of "women in the family way ;-)" smoking before they see the Dr and that was common too that the women could smoke while waiting for their monthly checkup.

Wow, this is impressive-this thread contains TWO subjects that almost got me kicked out of here:
Smoking and Ellen's friend .

I wonder how many smokers there were there. Was talking with one of the Drs at work today about how there was smoking in the hospitals years ago. The Drs and nurses would smoke at the nurses station, the patients would smoke in their rooms. Yikes. Times sure have changed.

Lots of people (Ellen Corby's age) use to smoke back then. Of course no one would ever picture grandma Walton smoking , but Ellen was only portraying a character, and she did a wonderful job.
Makes me think now of how many of the other Waltons smoke (or have given it up). I think I saw a post a while back that Michael Learned was holding a cigarette in one of the pics of the Waltons season 1 DVD.

Yes, I guess it's just a sign of the times.
Of course, Grandma Walton made her thoughts on smoking very clear in The Actress when she said something along the lines of:
"If the good Lord had intended us to smoke he would have put a chimney in our heads!"
I love her saying that.
I think I heard somewhere along the way though that someone on set was a cigar smoker, and I seem to recall that it was a woman. The name was never revealed though. Has anyone else heard that?

I wonder if anyone would light up a cigarette today sitting at a table with others. Maybe because of various laws, but I don't think today's smokers would be that rude. Looks like the event is outdoors.... probably wouldn't be considered that rude even today.... there are still plenty of smokers around.... It has always struck me as odd that so many folks like dining al fresco, on a sidewalk right next to a road -- even with all the vehicle exhaust fumes, and at the same time assume a holier-than-thou attitude about smokers. As a "quitter" for several years now, I still have great sympathy for the zillions of smokers who can't seem to stop -- it's known to be one of the most difficult addictions to break and not everyone can do it... some have a much stronger physical addiction than others.

Congratulations on quitting Jeri. I know how hard it was for my Dad. Unfortunately, it was too late for him. I know what you mean about the open air dining. Here in Alabama, that's where smokers can still practice their habit. So here, in addition to automobile emissions, we also get the second hand smoke. I stay inside!

Ive never smoked but I know how hard it is to quit fr those who do and may God bless you in your efforts and good health. And as recently as the late 1970s I was in a doctors office who was smoking ad told me to hold still.! Im glad those days are gone and hopefully people are more considerate lawful and start watching their health better. Best wishe

I doubt if anyone who has never smoked can fully understand how hard it is to quit.... I think it was Scarlett who said she would start up again when she hit 80! I like that idea..... gives me a reason to want to live to 80.... helps me to stay off them for now, and gives me something to look forward to Regarding pregnancy.... both my mom and dad smoked (and drank socially).... Mom didnt't stop either "habit" during her pregnancy, and had three kids all of decent weight and fully healthy !! For all health-related statistics, of course it's best to follow recommendations, but sometimes when you really look into the risk percentages, it's not all that bad.... and now we know that genetic makeup probably means more than anything else. My two sisters and I all feel we must have GREAT genes -- thank you, Mom and Dad!
