Gary Walberg was a prolific television actor, best known as Lt. Frank Monahan through all seven seasons of Quincy M.E. and as Speed, one of Oscar Madison's card playing cronies in The Odd Couple.
Garry Walberg, Actor on Two Jack Klugman TV Series, Dies
Garry Walberg, a character actor best known for his TV roles on Quincy, M.E. and The Odd Couple, died March 27 at an assisted-living facility in Northridge, Calif. He was 90.
Walberg died of chronic pulmonary obstructive disease and congestive heart failure, his family told the Los Angeles Times.
On the 1976-83 NBC crime drama Quincy, Walberg played Lt. Frank Monahan, who often jousted with Klugman’s crusading medical examiner. On ABC’s Odd Couple, which ran from 1970-74, Walberg played Speed, one of the regulars in the Friday night poker game hosted by Klugman’s Oscar Madison.
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Walberg also had a regular role as a police sergeant on John Cassavetes’ 1959-60 crime series Johnny Staccato and appeared on dozens of other shows including Mannix, The Waltons, Gunsmoke, Love American Style, The High Chaparral, Lassie and Peyton Place. His career spanned more than 40 years.
Walberg also had roles in the films Gangster Story (1959), starring Walter Matthau; The Maltese Bippy (1969); The Organization (1971); King Kong (1976); and MacArthur (1979).
